FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a way of copying files from your computer to another computer over the internet. EverWeb uses it to send your website to a web host's server (the computer that is always online and shows your website to visitors). You only need FTP if your website is hosted by another company. With EverWeb + Hosting you don't need it at all.
Do I need FTP?
| Where your website is hosted | In File > Edit Publishing Settings, set Publish To to | Do you need FTP details? |
|---|---|---|
| EverWeb + Hosting | EverWeb | No. You sign in to your EverWeb account, and there is no FTP password. |
| Another company, such as GoDaddy, Bluehost or IONOS | FTP Server | Yes, from that company |
| Nowhere yet, or you want the files on your computer | Folder | No |
On EverWeb + Hosting, sign in on a Mac at EverWeb > Settings > Account, or on Windows at Edit > Options > Account, using your EverWeb account email and password. EverWeb then publishes to your hosting plan.
What you need from your host
If you publish to another host, ask them for:
- Server: the address EverWeb connects to, such as ftp.yourdomain.com
- Username and Password: your FTP login. This is often different from the login for your host's website.
- Protocol and Port: the type of connection (see below)
- Directory/Path: the folder on the server that your website is shown from
We can't see or reset another company's FTP details. Only your host has them.
For every setting and what to do if it doesn't connect, see How do I publish my EverWeb website to another web host with FTP, FTPS or SFTP?
Use a secure connection if you can
Plain FTP sends your password and files without encryption. Most hosts now also offer a secure version. Use it if your host does:
- FTPS is called FTP with SSL/TLS in EverWeb. It usually uses port 21.
- SFTP is called FTP with SSH in EverWeb. It usually uses port 22.
Ask your host which one they support. EverWeb signs in with your username and password. It doesn't use SSH keys.
What is the directory path?
Your host's server has folders, the same as your computer. The directory path is the name of the folder your website lives in. It is often public_html, and it is not your website address.
If you publish to the wrong folder, EverWeb says it published but your website doesn't change. If that happens, ask your host for the exact path for your website's main folder on your FTP connection.
Seeing the files on your server
Publishing never deletes files that are already on the server. If you need to remove old files, you can use your host's file manager or an FTP app such as Cyberduck or FileZilla, with the same details. See I deleted a page in EverWeb but it's still online.
