If your website is hosted by another company, such as GoDaddy, Bluehost or IONOS, EverWeb can publish straight to it. You enter the FTP details from your host once, in File > Edit Publishing Settings. After that, you click Publish as usual.
On EverWeb + Hosting? You don't need any of this. Set Publish To to EverWeb and sign in. EverWeb + Hosting has no FTP password.
Before you start
- A copy of EverWeb that can publish. EverWeb Standalone and EverWeb + Hosting can both publish to another host. The free trial can't publish.
- Sign in to EverWeb. On a Mac, go to EverWeb > Settings > Account. On Windows, go to Edit > Options > Account. Use your EverWeb account email and password.
- Your FTP details from your host. We can't see or reset them. Only your host has them.
What to ask your host
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is how EverWeb sends your website's files to your host's computer (the server). You need these details:
| In EverWeb | What it is |
|---|---|
| Protocol | The type of connection. See the next table. |
| Server | The address EverWeb connects to, such as ftp.yourdomain.com |
| Username and Password | Your FTP login. This is often different from the login for your host's website. |
| Port | Usually 21 for FTP and FTP with SSL/TLS, and 22 for FTP with SSH |
| Directory/Path | The folder your website lives in, often public_html. It is not your website address. |
| Choose in EverWeb | Your host may call it | Port |
|---|---|---|
| FTP | FTP, plain FTP | 21 |
| FTP with SSL/TLS | FTPS, FTP over TLS, secure FTP | 21 |
| FTP with SSH | SFTP, SSH | 22 |
Use one of the secure choices if your host offers it. EverWeb signs in with your username and password. It doesn't use SSH keys.
Words you can send your host:
I publish my website with EverWeb. Please send me my FTP server address, FTP username and password, which protocol to use (FTP, FTPS or SFTP), the port, and the exact directory path for my website's main folder on that connection.
Enter your settings
- Open your project. Go to File > Edit Publishing Settings. You can also click your website's name at the top of the page list.
- Under Publishing, set Publish To to FTP Server.
- Under FTP Server Details, choose your Protocol first. EverWeb fills in Port for you. Change it only if your host gives a different number.
- Enter Server, Username and Password exactly as your host gave them, with no spaces before or after.
- Enter Directory/Path. If your host gave a long path such as
/home/yourname/public_htmland your changes don't appear, ask them whether it should be/public_htmlinstead. - Enter your full Website URL, such as
https://www.yourdomain.com. - Leave Subdirectory empty for your main website. Enter a folder name there only for a second website or a test copy.
Test the connection
Click Test Connection. "Your FTP details appear to be correct" means EverWeb could sign in.
The test doesn't check that Directory/Path is the folder your website is shown from. You'll check that after you publish.
If the test fails, the message usually says why:
- Username or password incorrect: ask your host for the FTP login, not the one for their website.
- The server doesn't appear to be correct: check Server with your host.
- The server doesn't support this type of connection: choose another Protocol, or ask your host which one to use.
Publish for the first time
- Go to File > Publish Entire Site. The first publish sends every page and file, so a large website can take a while. Keep your computer awake until it's done.
- Wait for "Your website has been successfully published to your server."
- Open your website in a private browser window to check it.
After this, click Publish in the toolbar. It sends only what changed. What's the difference between Publish and Publish Entire Site?
Still seeing your host's welcome page or your old website? Publishing doesn't delete files that are already there. Ask your host to remove the old files from your website's folder. See Will publishing with EverWeb overwrite my existing website?
If it doesn't work
| What you see | Where to go |
|---|---|
| "The directory/path couldn't be found", or Error 78 | Error 78: Can't find directory path (the directory/path couldn't be found) |
| It says it published, but your website doesn't change | Directory/Path is probably wrong. Ask your host for the exact path. |
| "Could not connect to port", or a data port error | Publishing to FTP: Cannot open data port, or 'Could not open data connection to port' |
| A protocol error | I get a Protocol Error when publishing to my FTP server (another web host) |
| "Can't change directory to ..." | When publishing to FTP I get an error: Can't change directory to 'directory name' |
| A dropped connection | Publishing stops with a dropped connection, or Error 56: Failure with receiving network data |
| It stops partway on a large website | Publishing a large website times out or stops when my computer is idle |
| An error number | What does this publishing error number mean? |
