This error means EverWeb signed in to your web host's server, but the server wouldn't let it open or create a folder it needs. Usually the folder name in your settings is wrong, your FTP login isn't allowed to write there, or your hosting space is full.
What you may see
- Can't change directory to followed by a folder name, in older versions of EverWeb.
- Error: 9 Permission was denied to change the remote FTP directory, in newer versions.
Fix it
- Check Directory/Path. Go to File > Edit Publishing Settings and make sure Directory/Path is exactly what your host gave you. See Error 78: Can't find directory path (the directory/path couldn't be found).
- Check Subdirectory. Leave it empty to publish to your main website address. If you use it for a second website or a test copy, enter a plain folder name with no dots, such as
test. - Run the diagnostics. In EverWeb 4.5 or later, go to Help > Publishing Connection Diagnostics and click Run Tests. The report says whether EverWeb could open your publishing folder.
- Ask your host. You can send them these words:
EverWeb signs in to my FTP account but can't open or create folders in [your Directory/Path]. Can you check that my FTP user has permission to write there, and that my account has disk space left?
- If your host says all of that is fine, ask them to remove your website's files from that folder, so EverWeb can publish into an empty one. Then go to File > Publish Entire Site.
Before step 5: your website is offline from the moment the files are removed until publishing finishes. Make sure you have your project file (the editable copy of your website, saved on your computer) and time to publish straight away. If the folder also holds files that weren't made in EverWeb, such as a blog or a shop, ask your host to keep them.
