You can copy a page inside the same website, copy a whole website to start a new one, or drag pages from one project to another. Here's how, and what to watch out for.
| You want to | Do this |
|---|---|
| Copy a page in the same website | Right-click the page in the page list and choose Duplicate |
| Copy a whole website | File > Projects Window, then Duplicate... |
| Copy a page into another website | Open both projects and drag the page across |
| Copy a few objects into another website | Copy and paste them |
Copy a page in the same website
- In the page list on the left, right-click the page (or Control-click on a Mac).
- Choose Duplicate.
The copy appears in the list. To rename it, right-click it and choose Rename. Its web address comes from File Name in Inspector > Page Settings, so change that too.
A copy is published like any other page. To keep it offline while you work on it (for example, a sale version of your prices page), right-click it and choose Do Not Publish. Untick it when you're ready.
If many pages share the same design, a Master Page saves you copying: you change it once and every page that uses it updates. See Put the same header, menu and footer on every page with a Master Page.
Copy a whole website
- Go to File > Projects Window.
- Click the three dots next to the website (the arrow on Windows) and choose Duplicate....
- The copy can have the same name as the original, so rename it straight away: click the three dots next to it and choose Rename Website.
- Before you publish the copy, open it and go to File > Edit Publishing Settings. The copy starts with the original's settings, so publishing it unchanged would replace your original website online. Point it at its new address or folder.
You don't need to rename the pages inside the copy.
To publish the copy as a second website on EverWeb + Hosting, it needs its own domain on your plan. See How can I host more than one website on my EverWeb hosting account?.
Copy pages into another project
- Open the project you're copying from.
- Go to File > Projects Window and open the project you're copying into as well.
- Put the two windows side by side.
- Drag the page from the page list of one project into the page list of the other. Give it a moment to appear. To copy a directory, drag the directory and the pages inside it come too.
- Check the copied page (see below), then publish with File > Publish Entire Site.
You can also drag a regular page into the other project's Master Pages section to use it as a Master Page there.
After copying, check
- Pictures. As of EverWeb 4.5, the page's pictures come along too and appear in the other project's Assets list.
- Master Page. If the page used a Master Page, check Inspector > Page Settings in the other project and choose one of that project's Master Pages if you need to.
- Links. Check that each link to another page still goes where it should. If not, open Inspector > Hyperlinks and choose the right page again.
- Navigation Menu. The menu lists the pages of the project it's in, so it changes to show the new project's pages.
- Fonts and colours. The other project may use different styles, so text can look different.
Copy objects into another project
- Select the objects on the page (a text box, picture, Container, or widget).
- Copy them (Command-C on a Mac, Ctrl-C on Windows).
- Click on the page in the other project and paste (Command-V or Ctrl-V).
If a pasted widget doesn't look right, add a fresh one from the Widgets tab and set it up again.
Common problems
"This page already exists in this site and cannot be transferred." The page came from a copy of this same project (a duplicate or a backup), so EverWeb sees it as the same page. In the project you're copying from, right-click the page and choose Duplicate, then drag the duplicate across instead.
You can't tell which copy is which. Rename the copy as soon as you make it. If you're not sure, open each one and check File > Edit Publishing Settings, or click Show On Disk in the Projects Window to see each file's name.
The original website changed when you published the copy. The copy still had the original's publishing settings. Change them in File > Edit Publishing Settings in the copy, then open the original and publish it again with File > Publish Entire Site.
You want to work on the same website on two computers. Don't make copies. Keep one project file in Dropbox: see Can I share my website project file with another user or computer?.
