EverWeb has a built-in blog. You add a blog page to your website, then write posts in it. EverWeb lists your newest posts first on the blog's main page and keeps a list of every post on an Archive page.
Add a blog
- Click Add Page in the toolbar.
- Choose a blog page style:
- Responsive website: choose the Blank Responsive theme, then the blog page style.
- Centered Layout website: choose your theme, then its blog page style. Not every theme has one.
- Click Select.
Three pages appear in your page list:
| Page | What it does |
|---|---|
| blog | The blog's main page. It lists your latest posts, with the start of each one |
| posts | Where you write and manage your posts |
| archive | A simple list of all your posts |
To rename the blog, double-click blog in the page list and type a new name. Its name becomes part of the web address, for example yourwebsite.com/blog/. You can't rename posts or archive.
Careful: deleting the blog page deletes the whole blog, including every post. If you delete it by mistake, choose Edit > Undo straight away.
Write a post
- Click posts in the page list. EverWeb creates your first post for you.
- To add another, click New Post, type the title and press Return (Enter on Windows).
- Type your post in the editor in the middle of the window. Its toolbar has text styles, links, lists and a button for video or audio.
- Add a picture by dragging it into the editor. It appears in that post only.
- Not ready yet? Tick Draft next to the post. It won't be published until you untick it.
- To change a post's date, double-click it in the Date column. Or tick Use Website Publish Date.
- Publish your website.
The preview area under the editor shows the post as visitors will see it. It works like a Master Page for your posts: anything you add there, such as social media buttons or a logo, appears on every post. To make posts wider, click the post in the preview area and drag the white handles on either side, or change Width in Inspector > Metrics.
To write a different summary for the blog's main page, click the settings cog above the posts list and choose Post Options…. The Short Summary replaces the start of the post on the main and Archive pages.
Choose what the main page and Archive show
- Click blog (or archive) in the page list.
- Click inside the list of posts on the page, then go to Inspector > Widget Settings.
- Change the settings you need:
- Article Length: how many characters of each post to show
- Posts Per Page and Show pagination buttons: split a long list into pages
- Show full archive link and Archive link text: add a link to the Archive page
Each post title on these pages links to the full post. Link colours are in the Hyperlinks tab of the Inspector.
Show your latest posts on another page
Drag the RSS Feed widget onto the page from the Widgets tab, and in its Widget Settings enter your blog's feed address. The feed is the file rss.xml in your blog's folder, for example https://www.yourwebsite.com/blog/rss.xml, with your own domain. On a responsive page, put the widget inside a Container.
To let visitors subscribe in a news reader, choose Insert > Button > RSS Subscribe.
Categories and tags
EverWeb blogs don't have categories or tags. If you write about separate topics, you can add a blog for each one and link them from your navigation menu.
Let visitors comment
EverWeb uses Disqus for blog comments. You need a free Disqus account first.
- Sign up at Disqus and create a site. Note its shortname.
- In EverWeb, click posts, then click the post in the preview area.
- In Inspector > Widget Settings, tick Enable Comments, choose Disqus as the Comment Engine, and enter your Disqus shortname.
- Publish.
You approve and delete comments on the Disqus website, not in EverWeb.
Bring posts in from iWeb or WordPress
Add a blog in EverWeb first, then:
- iWeb: in iWeb, publish your website to a folder on your computer. In EverWeb, choose File > Import > iWeb Blog Posts..., select that folder, then pick the blog.
- WordPress: in WordPress, go to Tools > Export, choose Posts and download the file. In EverWeb, choose File > Import > Wordpress Blog Posts... and select the file.
Moving a whole iWeb website? See iWeb replacement: how to update your old iWeb website with EverWeb.
Removing a post
Select it and click Delete Post. Publishing doesn't remove files that are already online, so the old post can still be reached until you remove it from your server: see I deleted a page in EverWeb but it's still online.
If a new post doesn't show after publishing, your browser may be showing its saved copy. Open the blog in a private window to check.
