How to clear your browser cache in Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox

After you publish, your browser may still show you the old version of your website. It keeps a saved copy of websites you've visited (its cache) so they load faster. Other people usually see the new version. This only affects devices that visited your website recently.

Quick check: open a private window

A private window doesn't use your saved copy. Open one and type your website's address:

  • Chrome: Command + Shift + N on a Mac, Ctrl + Shift + N on Windows
  • Edge: Command + Shift + N on a Mac, Ctrl + Shift + N on Windows
  • Firefox: Command + Shift + P on a Mac, Ctrl + Shift + P on Windows
  • Safari on a Mac: Shift + Command + N

If your changes show there, your website is fine. Clear your browser's saved copy to see them in a normal window. If they don't show in a private window either, clearing won't help. See I published but my website still shows the old version.

You can also force one page to reload fresh: Command + Shift + R on a Mac, or Ctrl + F5 on Windows, in Chrome, Edge and Firefox.

Before you clear

Tick only the cache option (it may be called cached images and files, or cached files). Clearing cookies or site data as well signs you out of websites. Clearing your browser has no effect on your live website or your project file.

Chrome on a computer

  1. Click the three dots at the top right, then Delete browsing data. Or press Command + Shift + Delete on a Mac, Ctrl + Shift + Delete on Windows.
  2. Set the time range to All time.
  3. Tick Cached images and files. Untick the others if you want to stay signed in.
  4. Click Delete data.

Chrome on Android

  1. Tap the three dots, then Delete browsing data.
  2. Tap More options and choose a time range, such as All time.
  3. Tick Cached images and files.
  4. Tap Delete data.

Edge

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Delete on Windows, or Command + Shift + Delete on a Mac. Or click the three dots, then Settings > Privacy, search, and services, and next to Clear browsing data now, click Choose what to clear.
  2. Set Time range to All time.
  3. Tick Cached images and files.
  4. Click Clear now.

Firefox

  1. Click the menu button (three lines) at the top right, then Settings.
  2. Click Privacy & Security.
  3. Under Cookies and Site Data, click Clear Data....
  4. Set When to Everything, and tick only Temporary cached files and pages.
  5. Click Clear.

Safari on a Mac

Remove the saved copy of your website only:

  1. Choose Safari > Settings, then click Privacy.
  2. Click Manage Website Data.
  3. Search for your domain, select it and click Remove.
  4. Quit Safari and open it again.

Or empty the whole cache: in Safari > Settings > Advanced, tick Show features for web developers. Then choose Develop > Empty Caches (Option + Command + E).

Safari on iPhone or iPad

  1. Open Settings, tap Apps, then Safari. On iOS 17 and earlier, Safari is in the main Settings list.
  2. Tap Clear History and Website Data.
  3. Choose a time frame and tap Clear History.

This also clears your history. To keep it, go to Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced > Website Data instead, and remove your website's data there.

Still seeing the old version?

Try your phone on mobile data, with Wi-Fi off. If it's still old everywhere, the cause isn't your browser. See I published but my website still shows the old version.
