Find your number in the table below. Before you change any settings, try the phone hotspot test. In a few minutes it tells you whether the problem is your network or your settings.
1. Copy the error text
When publishing fails, EverWeb shows an error window.
- Click Copy To Clipboard. The button's name is translated if you use EverWeb in another language.
- Paste the text into an email or a note to keep it.
The text starts with "DO NOT PUBLICLY POST THIS LOG". That's normal. Send it to us, but don't post it on a public forum. Please send the text and not a screenshot, because a screenshot doesn't show everything we need.
2. Try a phone hotspot
- Turn off any VPN, and iCloud Private Relay on a Mac (how).
- Turn on your phone's hotspot and connect your computer to it. This uses your phone's mobile data. If you have another Wi-Fi network nearby, you can use that instead.
- Click Publish in the toolbar.
| What happens | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| It publishes | Your settings are fine. Something on your usual network is in the way, such as a router, a firewall, an office or hotel network, or a blocked address. See My IP address is blocked. If that doesn't help, restart your router and ask your internet provider whether they block FTP (port 21). |
| The same error appears | The cause is probably a setting or the server. Go to the table. |
| A large website stops partway | This doesn't prove much. Hotspots can struggle to send thousands of files. Try another Wi-Fi network if you can. |
3. Find your number
Some fixes use this setting, so here's where it is. On a Mac, go to EverWeb > Settings. On Windows, go to Edit > Options. Then open the Publishing tab and find Use passive publishing connections. Keep it on normally. If it's already on and the fix doesn't work, try it off, then turn it back on.
| Error | What you may see | What it usually means | What to try |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | Your connection to the server is being blocked | Your computer can't reach the server. A firewall, a VPN or a blocked address is usually in the way. | EverWeb Hosting: sign in to your EverWeb account page (the Client Area) on this computer. That clears a block automatically. Another host: ask them whether your IP address is blocked, and confirm your FTP details. |
| 19 | This was either a strange reply to a 'RETR' command or a zero byte transfer complete | The server sent a reply EverWeb didn't expect. | Turn on Use passive publishing connections, then publish again. |
| 28 | Operation timeout, or Your IP address may have been blocked | The connection was too slow, was cut off or was blocked. | Sign in to your Client Area if you host with us. Turn off any VPN and iCloud Private Relay. See large websites that time out. |
| 30 | The FTP PORT command returned an error | Your computer and the server couldn't agree how to send files. | Turn on Use passive publishing connections. Set Maximum Connections to 1 on the same tab. If it continues, ask your host whether FTP is working on your account, and your internet provider whether they block it. |
| 55 | Failed sending network data, sometimes with "may have run out of disk space" | The hosting space is full, so files can't be saved. | EverWeb Hosting: see My hosting is full. What is using my space and how do I clear it? (Error 55). Another host: ask them how much space you have left. If there's plenty, send us the error text. |
| 56 | Failure with receiving network data | The connection dropped while EverWeb was waiting for the server. | Change Use passive publishing connections to the opposite setting, then publish again. Try the hotspot test if you haven't. |
| 78 | Can't find directory path | The Directory/Path in File > Edit Publishing Settings doesn't match a folder on your server. Test Connection can pass and this can still appear. | Ask your host, using the question below. Enter their answer exactly. |
| 43 | Unknown error | The connection was interrupted before files started to upload. | Restart your computer, then publish again. If you publish to a subfolder, check that Subdirectory contains a plain folder name with no dots. Leave it empty to publish to your main address. |
| 18 | Unknown error | We've mostly seen this with another host, using a secure connection (FTP with SSL/TLS). | Ask your host which Protocol to use and check it in File > Edit Publishing Settings. If it's already right, send us the error text, as we may have another setting for you to try. |
| 2, 8, 79 or any other number | Unknown error | EverWeb has no specific explanation for these, and the cause varies. | Publish again in a few minutes. Confirm your Protocol and login with your host if you use one. Then send us the error text. |
Words you can send your host for Error 78:
I publish with EverWeb using [FTP / FTP with SSL/TLS / FTP with SSH]. What is the exact Directory/Path for my website's main folder on that connection?
It's often public_html, but it varies by host, and some use a longer path. It isn't your website address.
How to know it worked
EverWeb tells you the site has been published. Open your website in a private browser window to check your changes. Your browser's saved copy can show an older version.
If only some pages look wrong afterwards, use File > Publish Entire Site. Here's how that differs from Publish.
Still stuck?
In EverWeb 4.5 or later, go to Help > Publishing Connection Diagnostics and save the report. Then contact us with:
- The full error text
- The diagnostics report
- A full-screen screenshot of File > Edit Publishing Settings
- Whether the hotspot test made a difference
