Your EverWeb Hosting plan has most likely run out of storage. Your live website normally stays online, but it can't be updated until there is room. The message tells you to upgrade, but that isn't your only option: you can often clear enough space without paying anything.
What the message means
When you publish to EverWeb Hosting, you may see this:
Error: 55 Failed sending network data. Your account may have run out of disk space. Please upgrade your EverWeb account from your client area.
You may see this instead:
Last Error: 55: Send failure: Broken pipe
Error: 55: Failed sending network data.
It means the upload was cut off partway through, and a full plan is the most common reason.
Publishing to another web host? You'll see "Your web server may have run out of disk space". That is your host's storage, not ours, so ask your host to check how much space you have left.
What fills up your space
Your plan has one amount of storage, shared by your website and all your email. These are the usual causes:
| What | Why it adds up |
|---|---|
| Old website files | Publishing never removes anything already on the server. Pages, images and videos you deleted in EverWeb stay there and keep using space. |
| Extra copies of your website | Every website on your plan counts. So does each copy published to a subdirectory, including one published there by mistake. |
| Large videos and images | A few large videos can use more space than the rest of your website. |
| Every folder in every mailbox counts, including Sent and Trash. Large attachments use the most. |
This is why deleting files from Assets doesn't lower your usage. That changes your project file (the editable copy of your website on your computer), not the files already on the server.
See how much you're using
In your account:
- Sign in to your EverWeb account page (the Client Area).
- Go to Services > My Services and click your hosting plan.
- Click Resource Usage and look at Disk Space.
In EverWeb: go to File > Edit Publishing Settings and scroll to the EverWeb Storage bar at the bottom.
These numbers update daily, so they won't show a change straight away. To see the latest number in EverWeb, sign out and back in at EverWeb > Settings > Account (Windows: Edit > Options > Account). For today's number, contact us. We can see the current figure and tell you how much is website and how much is email.
Clear space for free
Start with step 1. It tells you which of the other steps will help.
- Ask us what's using your space. Contact us with your website address.
- If it's email: delete mail you don't need, then empty the Trash. The space isn't released until you do. See My email stopped working, or people say my mailbox is full, but I still have space.
- If it's a website you no longer need: ask us to remove it. This is permanent, and any email addresses at that domain are deleted with it.
- If it's your current website: follow the steps below to clear out the old files.
Clear out your website's old files
We empty your website's folder on our server, and you publish everything again. This removes every old file and leaves only what's in your project now. Staff may call it a "clean publish".
Before you start:
- This can't be undone, and we don't keep a backup of your server files.
- You need your project file on your computer, up to date and ready to publish.
- Your website is offline from the moment we remove the files until you finish publishing.
- Websites published to a subdirectory are stored inside the main website's folder, so they are removed too. Each one needs publishing again from its own project file.
- Anything on the server that isn't in your project file, such as a file someone uploaded separately, won't come back.
Steps:
- In EverWeb, make your website smaller if you can. See "Make your website smaller" below.
- Choose a time when you can publish straight away, then ask us to clear the files. Tell us which website.
- When we confirm the files are gone, open your project file and choose File > Publish Entire Site.
- Wait for EverWeb to say the website was published.
- Check your website in a private browser window.
When it has worked, the publish finishes without an error. Ask us for the new usage figure, because the bars only update daily.
If you get Error 55 again, your website is bigger than your plan. Clearing old files can't fix that, so make it smaller or move to a bigger plan.
Make your website smaller
- Turn on Export Optimized Images under File > Edit Publishing Settings. Photographers may notice a small loss in image quality, so check a few pages.
- Put videos on YouTube or Vimeo, instead of storing them on your hosting. Show them on your page with a shape whose Fill is set to Video.
- Reduce or replace large files such as videos, PDFs and photos straight from a camera.
These changes only lower your usage once the old files have been removed from the server.
What happens to your email while the plan is full
Email is affected as soon as the plan is full:
- Mail sent to you is refused, and the sender gets a message saying your mailbox is full. We can't recover those messages, so the sender needs to send them again.
- You may not be able to send mail or save drafts.
- Messages from your website's contact form may not arrive.
If this is happening, clear space or move to a bigger plan as soon as you can. Contact us if you need help working out what to remove.
Moving to a bigger plan
This is the right choice if your website and email really need the space, or if you want to keep everything on the server.
You only pay the price difference for the time left on your current plan. From your next renewal, you pay the normal price of the new plan.
- Sign in to the Client Area.
- Go to Services > My Services and click your hosting plan.
- Click Upgrade.
- Choose a plan with more space and complete the checkout.
The extra space is added automatically, and you can publish straight away. See How can I upgrade my EverWeb + Hosting account?
If you have plenty of space
If we confirm you have room, the upload was cut off by something else, usually your connection. Try the steps in EverWeb won't publish my website: what to try.
If you still need help, press Copy To Clipboard in the error window and send us the whole text with your website address.
