A large website can take a long time to publish, because EverWeb sends every page, picture and file one by one. If your computer goes to sleep or loses its internet connection partway through, publishing stops, often with Error 28: Operation timeout. Keep your computer awake and connected until EverWeb says it's done.
Keep your Mac awake
In System Settings (macOS Ventura and later):
- Mac laptop: go to Battery > Options and turn on Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off. Keep it plugged in with the lid open.
- Desktop Mac: go to Energy (called Energy Saver in some versions) and turn on Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off.
- Either: go to Lock Screen and set Turn display off on power adapter when inactive to a longer time while you publish.
On older versions of macOS, these settings are under System Preferences > Energy Saver.
Keep EverWeb open in front while it publishes, especially on a slow connection.
Keep Windows awake
EverWeb asks Windows to stay awake while it publishes. Power settings or closing a laptop lid can still interrupt it.
- Go to Settings > System > Power & battery (Windows 10: Power & sleep).
- Under the screen and sleep settings, set sleep when plugged in to Never while you publish.
- If Wi-Fi still drops, right-click Start, open Device Manager, and expand Network adapters. Open your adapter's Properties, then on the Power Management tab, untick Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
If it still stops partway
Try these in order:
- Click Continue Publishing when the timeout message appears, not Cancel. Each try sends only the files that didn't make it, so it gets further each time.
- Use Publish once your website is online. File > Publish Entire Site sends every file again, which gives a weak connection more chances to drop. What's the difference between Publish and Publish Entire Site?
- Set Maximum Connections to 1. On a Mac, go to EverWeb > Settings > Publishing. On Windows, go to Edit > Options > Publishing. It's slower but steadier.
- Use a steady connection. A cable to your router, or strong Wi-Fi, works best. Phone hotspots and satellite internet such as Starlink often drop long uploads. Turn off any VPN, and iCloud Private Relay on a Mac.
- Make big videos smaller, or put them on YouTube or Vimeo. Large files take longest and are the most likely to be cut off. To show a YouTube or Vimeo video, select a shape, go to Shape Options, set Fill to Video, and choose YouTube Video or Vimeo Video.
If it fails straight away
If you see Error 28 before anything uploads, your connection is probably being blocked. See My IP address is blocked: email, publishing or my site won't connect and What does this publishing error number mean?
