EverWeb's templates (also called theme templates) are ready-made page designs. More than 200 are included with EverWeb. You choose one when you create a website, and you can add a page from any template to your website at any time. To get templates released since you installed EverWeb, use Check for New Templates....
Get new templates
- On a Mac, choose EverWeb > Check for New Templates.... On Windows, choose Help > Check for New Templates.... You can also click Check for New Templates... at the top right of the template chooser.
- A list of templates you don't have yet appears, all ticked. Untick any you don't want, or use the cog button to choose Check All or Check None. Click Preview next to a template to see its home page.
- Click Download. If you've chosen a lot of templates, this takes a while.
"Your templates are up to date." means you already have them all. You don't have to download in advance: a template you haven't used is downloaded when you pick it, so stay online.
Start a new website from a template
In the Projects window (titled Welcome to EverWeb), click Create a new website, or choose File > New Website. In the template chooser, use the filter at the top left (All, Fixed Width, Responsive or New) or the search box. Click a template on the left, a page style on the right, then Select. If EverWeb asks whether to use the template's Google Fonts, say yes. For an empty page, choose Blank or Blank Responsive.
For the whole process, see Your first EverWeb website, step by step: from free trial to live website.
Add a page from a template to your website
- EverWeb 4.6 and later: click Add Page in the toolbar and choose From Template..., or choose File > New Page > From Template.... EverWeb 4.5: click Add Page in the toolbar.
- Choose a template and a page style, then click Select. To keep the page out of your navigation menu, untick Include page in navigation menu first.
- Replace the template's text and pictures with your own.
Use Add Directory the same way to add a directory (a folder of pages, used for drop-down menus).
Pick the same kind of page as the rest of your website. Add responsive pages to a responsive website, and fixed-width pages to a fixed-width one. Most fixed-width templates also have a Mobile page style for a separate phone page. See Do I need to redesign my EverWeb website for mobile devices?
Can I change my website to a different template?
There's no button that applies a new template to pages you've already built. Add pages from the new template and copy your text and pictures across. In EverWeb 4.6 and later you can also change fonts and colours everywhere at once in Format > Website Styles...: see Keep your text consistent with Paragraph Styles.
Templates from other designers
Some designers sell their own EverWeb templates. A template file ends in .ewtheme.
- On a Mac, double-click it and click Install (not Edit). EverWeb says "Your template has been installed." and it appears in the chooser.
- On Windows, or if that doesn't work, quit EverWeb, copy the .ewtheme into C:\Users\(your name)\AppData\Roaming\EverWeb\Templates (on a Mac, Library > Application Support > EverWeb > Templates in your user folder), then open EverWeb.
Some designers sell a ready-made website (a project file) instead: open it with File > Open. The designer supports their own templates.
A template doesn't show up or won't download
Set the filter to All, clear the search box and run Check for New Templates... again. If a download fails, check that you're online, turn off any VPN and try later. Still stuck? Contact us at https://billing.ragesw.com/submitticket.php with the template's name and the exact message.
