Install and use third-party widgets in EverWeb

A widget is an add-on that puts a ready-made feature on your page, such as a gallery, a menu or a booking button. EverWeb comes with its own widgets, and other companies make more, some free and some paid. You'll find many of them on the EverWeb add-ons page. To install one, drag it onto the Widgets tab in EverWeb. It then appears in the list next to the built-in widgets, ready to drag onto a page.

Before you start: what a widget looks like

A widget's name ends in .ewwdgt. On a Mac it usually shows as one icon, but it can show as an ordinary folder full of files: that's still the same widget. On Windows it's always a folder.

Most widgets download as a .zip file. Unzip it first (double-click it on a Mac, or right-click it and choose Extract All on Windows). Always install the whole .ewwdgt item, never the files inside it.

Install a widget

  1. Open your website in EverWeb.
  2. Click the Widgets tab in the Inspector on the right.
  3. If you use categories, choose one from the list under the tab. Otherwise leave it on All.
  4. Drag the widget from Finder (Mac) or File Explorer (Windows) onto the list of widgets.
  5. The widget appears in the list. Drag it onto your page, then set it up in Inspector > Widget Settings.

EverWeb moves the widget into its own Widgets folder, so it disappears from your Downloads folder. Keep the zip file you downloaded: it's your backup.

Another way on a Mac: double-click the widget. EverWeb says "Your widget has been installed." Close your website and open it again to see the widget in the list. Some widgets also have a file called Install inside the widget's folder, which you can double-click on a Mac or Windows computer in the same way.

Install many widgets at once

  • Several widgets: select them all and drag them onto the list together.
  • A folder of widgets: drag the folder onto the list. EverWeb makes a new category named after the folder and puts the widgets in it. The widgets need to be directly inside that folder, not in folders within it. You can drag several folders at once, and each one becomes its own category.
  • Widget packs (the Membership Sites widgets, for example) may include an Install file that installs the whole pack into one category.

If a widget with the same name is already installed, EverWeb asks what to do: Replace Existing Widgets, Skip Existing Widgets or Cancel. To update a widget to a newer version, install the new one and choose Replace Existing Widgets.

Organise, check and remove widgets

Under the Widgets tab are the category list, a search box and three buttons: + adds a category, the cog renames it, and - removes it. All shows every widget, Default only EverWeb's own.

Right-click a third-party widget to Move To another category, see its version with About..., or Delete... it. Deleting moves it to the Trash (the Recycle Bin on Windows), so you can drag it back if you change your mind. EverWeb's built-in widgets can't be moved or deleted.

New computer, or reinstalling EverWeb

Third-party widgets are installed on your computer. They aren't saved inside your project file (the editable copy of your website). On a new computer, or after reinstalling EverWeb, install your widgets again before you publish.

In EverWeb 4.6 and later, if a page uses a widget that isn't installed on this computer, EverWeb tells you after publishing: "The widget file ... is missing. Reinstall the widget, then publish again."

More detail: installed widgets are kept in a folder called Widgets. On a Mac it's in your user folder under Library > Application Support > EverWeb. On Windows it's C:\Users\(your name)\AppData\Roaming\EverWeb\Widgets. To move all your widgets to a new computer in one go, quit EverWeb on both computers and copy that whole folder across.

Who supports a third-party widget

The company or person who made a widget supports it, not RAGE Software. Ask them about its settings, licence and updates. Some widgets were made only for fixed-width pages, others only for responsive pages (one page that adapts to every screen), so check the maker's notes and try your page in Preview.

"This widget is not compatible with this version of EverWeb" means the widget needs a newer EverWeb than yours.

If a widget stops working and its maker can't help, or their website has gone, contact us at https://billing.ragesw.com/submitticket.php . A built-in feature can often do the same job.
