A Domain Transfer Failed email means the transfer of your domain to us stopped before it finished. Your website and email keep working as they are, because your domain stays with your current registrar (the company where you bought or renew your domain). Fix the reason given in the email, then resubmit the transfer.
See why it failed
The email gives the reason. You can also see it in your EverWeb account page (the Client Area):
- Sign in to the Client Area.
- Go to Domains > My Domains and click the domain, or choose Manage Domain from its menu.
- The transfer status and the error are shown there. Click Refresh Status to see the latest. When the transfer can be tried again, you'll also see Resubmit Transfer, and sometimes Resend Verification Email.
For the exact wording of each error, see I got an error when trying to transfer my domain. What does it mean and what should I do?
The usual reasons, and what to do
The domain is locked. Sign in at your current registrar, or ask them, and turn off the domain lock (it may be called Registrar Lock or Transfer Lock). Then resubmit.
The transfer code was wrong or has expired. The transfer code is also called an EPP or authorization code. Ask your current registrar for a new one, then resubmit and enter it. Copy and paste it rather than typing it. See Where do I get the EPP code?
The domain was registered or transferred less than 60 days ago. This is an ICANN rule. Wait until 60 days have passed, then resubmit.
The owner's details changed recently. If the domain owner's name, organisation or email address was changed at your current registrar, they may lock the domain against transfers for 60 days. Ask them whether that lock is on, and whether they can remove it.
The domain has expired, or is about to. A domain that has expired can't usually be transferred. Renew it with your current registrar first, then resubmit.
Nobody approved the transfer. Some transfers send an approval email to the domain's contact email address. Check that inbox and its spam folder. If the Client Area shows Resend Verification Email, click it. If you still don't receive it:
- Ask your current registrar which email address is on the domain, and make sure you can receive mail there.
- If privacy protection (also called ID protection or WHOIS privacy) is on, it can hide that address, so the email doesn't reach you. Turn it off at your current registrar.
- If you change the contact email, ask your registrar first whether the change will lock the domain for 60 days. Some let you avoid that lock.
We can't see the approval email or send it to another address while the domain is still with your current registrar.
Your current registrar rejected it. Contact them, ask why, and fix what they tell you. Then resubmit.
.uk domains. There is no transfer code. Ask your current registrar to change the IPS tag to ENOM, then resubmit.
Resubmit the transfer
Once you've fixed the reason, open the domain in Domains > My Domains in the Client Area and click Resubmit Transfer. If there's a new transfer code, enter it when asked. A transfer usually takes 2 to 5 days, and sometimes up to 7. Your current registrar may email you about it: approve it so it finishes sooner, and don't cancel it.
If it fails again for the same reason, or the reason isn't clear, contact us with the domain name and the error shown in the Client Area.
You don't have to transfer
Your website works the same whether the domain is with us or with another company. If the transfer keeps failing, you can leave the domain where it is and point it to EverWeb Hosting instead: see Point your domain to EverWeb Hosting (update nameservers / DNS).
