Subdomains and DNS records: set up blog.yourdomain.com or add a TXT or CNAME record

A subdomain is a name in front of your domain, such as blog.yourdomain.com. It shows a whole website of its own, not one page of your main website. A DNS record is a line in your domain's settings that connects it to another service or proves to Google the domain is yours. On EverWeb Hosting there's no DNS panel in your account: send us the record and we add it.

A blog or a second section: do you need a subdomain?

Usually not. A folder of your main website, such as yourdomain.com/blog, is simpler and works with every EverWeb feature.

Put a website on a subdomain

A subdomain needs its own website in EverWeb, with its own publishing settings. Link the two websites with links set to An External Page and the full address.

On EverWeb + Hosting

The Domains list in EverWeb shows your domains, not subdomains, so we set them up for you:

  1. Make the second website. In the Projects window (titled Welcome to EverWeb), click Create a new website.
  2. Contact us with the subdomain you want, for example blog.yourdomain.com, and the name of that website in EverWeb.
  3. We create the subdomain and reply with what to choose in File > Edit Publishing Settings.
  4. Choose File > Publish Entire Site, then open the subdomain in a private browser window to check it.

It shares your plan's storage and gets a security certificate (HTTPS) like your main website. A security warning can show for up to 24 hours at first.

On another web host

  1. Create the subdomain in your host's control panel (often under Subdomains) and note the folder it uses.
  2. In EverWeb, open the second website, go to File > Edit Publishing Settings and set Publish To to FTP Server with your FTP details. See How do I publish my EverWeb website to another web host with FTP, FTPS or SFTP?
  3. In Directory/Path, enter the subdomain's folder (ask your host for the exact path). In Website URL, type its full address, such as https://blog.yourdomain.com. Leave Subdirectory empty.
  4. Choose File > Publish Entire Site.

Add a DNS record for Google or another service

For example, Google Search Console asks for a TXT record, newsletter services such as Mailchimp for CNAME or TXT records, and an online shop may want a CNAME so shop.yourdomain.com opens your shop.

First, check where your records live

Records go wherever your nameservers (the setting that tells the internet which company runs your domain) point. A record added anywhere else does nothing.

Your nameserversWhere to add the record
EverWeb's, such as ns123.ragesw.comSend it to us (below)
Your registrar's, Cloudflare's or another host'sIn that company's DNS settings, or ask them to add it

Not sure? Send us your domain name and we'll tell you.

Send us the record

Contact us and paste these as text, not a picture:

  1. Your domain
  2. The type, such as TXT or CNAME
  3. The Name or Host (@, or an empty box, means the domain itself)
  4. The Value, copied in full
  5. The TTL, if the service gives one

We reply when it's added. It can take a few hours to work, so wait before you click Verify in the other service, and try again later if it fails.

Good to know:

  • MX records decide where your email goes. Changing them moves your email. Tell us what you're setting up, and back up your email first.
  • A domain can have only one SPF record (a TXT record starting v=spf1). Send yours anyway: we combine it with the one your email already uses.
  • Changing the A record of your domain, or of www, moves your website away from EverWeb Hosting. Ask us first.
  • A subdomain that uses a CNAME, such as shop.yourdomain.com, can't also show an EverWeb website.

Google Search Console: TXT record or meta tag

  • Domain property (every version of your address, with and without www): needs a TXT record. Send it to us as above.
  • URL prefix property (one address, such as https://www.yourdomain.com): choose the HTML tag method, with no DNS change. Paste Google's meta tag into Head Code under Head/Footer Code in File > Edit Publishing Settings, choose File > Publish Entire Site, then click Verify. Leave the tag there, because Google checks it again.
