Extra blank space at the bottom of a page almost always means something is holding the page open: an object further down than you think (often an empty or see-through one), or a minimum height set on the Master Page. Space down one side usually means an object is wider than the page or sits past its edge.
Find what's holding the page open
- Choose Window > Show Layout. Blue lines show the page's sections, so you can see which one has grown.
- Choose Edit > Select All. Every object shows its selection handles, including empty TextBoxes and see-through shapes. Look near the bottom and past the edges. Then click an empty spot to deselect before you press any key.
- Can't click the object? Right-click that spot (or Control-click on a Mac) and choose Pick Layer, then pick it from the list.
- In EverWeb 4.6 and later, Window > Show Layers lists every object on the page, including hidden and very small ones. Click a name to select that object.
- Delete what you don't need, or move it up.
If every page has the same gap, the object or setting is on the Master Page. Open the Master Page and look there. See Put the same header, menu and footer on every page with a Master Page.
What causes the space
| What you see | Usual cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Empty space under the footer on every page | The Master Page's Minimum Content Height is taller than your shorter pages | Lower it (see below) |
| Empty space under the footer on one page | An empty TextBox, a see-through shape or a forgotten object low on the page | Find it as above, and delete it or move it up |
| The editor scrolls far below the footer | An object with Allow free dragging ticked sits below the footer, and the page reaches down to it | Select it with Pick Layer and move it up, or untick Allow free dragging in Inspector > Metrics |
| A huge header or footer | Objects were placed in the header or footer section by mistake | Hold Command (Mac) or Alt (Windows) and drag them into the content section. See How do I move or drag objects into the header, a blue line appears that stops me |
| A strip of a different colour under a short page on a big screen | The page has ended and the browser background shows below it | Make the browser background match. See Page background and browser background: change the colour or add a full-size background picture |
| Space above the page, and the same below it, on a Centered Layout page | Top Margin | Set Top Margin to 0 |
| A gap above or below a picture on a phone | The picture is set to Scale to Fit | Tick Auto adjust height to image size. See step 4 of My website looks fine on my computer but is cut off or jumbled on my phone |
Lower the page's minimum height
Inspector > Page Settings (the first icon) has Minimum Content Height, Minimum Header Height and Minimum Footer Height under Page Layout. A section always grows to fit what's in it, and shrinks back to its minimum when you remove things.
- If these boxes are greyed out, the page uses a Master Page. Select the Master Page in your page list instead.
- Set Minimum Content Height to a small number, such as 100. Each page still grows to fit its own content.
- Set Minimum Footer Height to the height your footer really needs.
Responsive pages have the same two settings, but no header section.
Responsive pages: a gap inside a section
A Container with a fixed height keeps that height even when its content is shorter.
- Select the Container (right-click and use Pick Layer if you keep selecting what's inside it).
- Go to Inspector > Widget Settings (the cog, the last icon), and under Sizing set Height to Auto.
- Check that Min Height is 0 or small.
- Select the last object in the section and check Inspector > Metrics > Margins & Padding for a large bottom margin or padding.
Blank space down the side
If the page slides sideways or shows an empty strip down the right, an object is too wide or sits past the edge of the page.
- Centered Layout pages: on a phone, the page is shrunk to fit its Content Width, so anything sticking out past the right-hand edge adds an empty strip. Move that object back inside, or make it narrower.
- Responsive pages: follow My website looks fine on my computer but is cut off or jumbled on my phone.
Check that it worked
Publish your website. If you changed the Master Page, use File > Publish Entire Site. Then open the page in a private window on your computer and your phone. It should end below your footer, with nothing to scroll past and no sideways movement.
