In EverWeb 4.6 and later, a TextBox can hold real bulleted and numbered lists. Highlight your lines and choose Format > Lists > Bulleted List or Numbered List, then press Tab to indent an item and Shift+Tab to move it back out. You change the bullet, its colour and the indent in Inspector > Text > Bullets & Lists, or for every list at once in Format > Website Styles.... EverWeb 4.5 has no list tool: the last section explains what to do there.
Make a list (EverWeb 4.6 and later)
- Double-click into a TextBox and type your items, pressing Return after each one. An item can run over several lines.
- Highlight the items. To turn all the text in the box into a list, click the TextBox once instead.
- Choose Format > Lists > Bulleted List or Numbered List. You can also right-click the text and choose Lists.
When an item runs onto a second line, that line starts under the text, not under the bullet.
While typing: at the start of a line, type - or * and a space for a bulleted list, or 1. and a space for a numbered one. Press Return on an empty item to end the list. Format > Lists > Remove List turns a list back into ordinary text.
Indent items to make a sub-list
- Click at the start of an item and press Tab to move it in one level, or Shift+Tab to move it back out. Highlight several items to move them together. Format > Lists > Increase List Level and Decrease List Level do the same.
- In a numbered list, tick Tiered to number sub-items 2.1, 2.2. Start at sets the first number, for example to carry on a list after a picture.
Change the bullet, number style or colour of one list
Highlight the list items and open Inspector > Text > Bullets & Lists.
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Bullet | Type any character to use as the bullet, such as ✓ or ★, or click the … button to choose a symbol or emoji |
| Number | The number style: 1. 2. 3., (1), 01., I. II., i. ii., A. B., a. b. and so on |
| Match text | Ticked: the bullet uses the same size and colour as the item's text. Untick it to set your own |
| Colour swatch and Size | The bullet's own colour and size (untick Match text first). Colour emoji keep their own colours |
| Gap to text | The space between the bullet and the words |
| Reset Paragraph to Style | Puts back the List Style's own settings |
To use the same look on other lists, click the ⋯ button next to List Style and choose Update "Bulleted List" from This Paragraph (every list using that style changes) or Save as New List Style....
Change every list at once with List Styles
- Choose Format > Website Styles... and click List Styles. Every project has Bulleted List and Numbered List, including projects made with older versions. You can restyle them but not delete them.
- Click a style and change its settings:
- Type: Bullet, Number or Shape. Shape gives drawn bullets such as Square, Diamond, Arrow, Check and Star.
- Follow List Item Text: untick it to choose the bullet's own colour, Marker Font and Marker Size.
- Indent per level (how far each Tab moves an item) and Gap to text.
- Click Save. Every list that uses the style updates.
To add your own style, such as green ticks for a "What's included" list, click + under the styles, then choose it in List Style in the Inspector.
Space between list items
Each item is its own paragraph, so the gap between items is the After Paragraph setting in Inspector > Text > Spacing. Highlight the list and set it to about 4 to 8 for a tighter list. List Styles and Paragraph Styles don't store this spacing. See Change line spacing (line height) and the space between paragraphs.
In EverWeb 4.5
EverWeb 4.5 has no list tool, so you type the bullets yourself:
- Option+8 on a Mac types •. On Windows, hold Alt and type 0149 on the number keypad. Then type a space and the item. To colour the bullet, highlight only the bullet and change its colour in Inspector > Text.
- Keep items to one line where you can: a wrapped line starts at the left edge, not under the text. For sub-items on a Centered Layout page, use a second TextBox moved a little to the right.
- The text editor in the Text Section and FlexBox widgets has list buttons, but you can't change the bullet or its colour there.
- Other developers make list widgets: see the EverWeb add-ons page and Install and use third-party widgets in EverWeb. The widget's maker supports it.
Moving up to 4.6? Lists typed with Option+8 stay as ordinary text. Delete the • and space at the start of each line, highlight the lines and choose Format > Lists > Bulleted List.
