Viewing Linking to external page in a directory

Linking to external page in a directory

User: Larry D. 11 years ago
I would like to provide a link in the drop down directory menu, either one of my pages already in another directory or, more often, to an external page. Right now I have false pages with re-direct code but that is not very elegant as it shows the blank page for a few seconds.

If you are using a completely blank page - and the redirect timing is set to zero - most visitors will not be aware of it and it certainly shouldn't show for several seconds.

If you want complete control over the navigation styling and content, you can create a custom one on a master page. That way you can have links to external pages and opening in a new window where required.

There are numerous sites where you can create navigation menus and copy/paste the code. Try entering something like "online navigation menu generator" into a search.

Roddy, Thank you for your reply.

Unfortunately I haven't a clue what you a talking about. I don't see how creating a new master page addresses my problem.

"There are numerous sites where you can create navigation menus and copy/paste the code." What "sites" are you refering to?

Doing a search as you suggested only brought up this thread and others that didn't seem to be address the problem.

Sorry, but it just wasn't helpful.

I can help with this part- Enter 'website navigation menu generator' into search, the list should be long of sites to build and copy the code. He is referring to websites where you can make elements for websites using css/html and the site generates the code, you copy the code and paste it to your website.

Try this site first. It is a button generator and is simple to use and you can see how the menu sites will work

Until master pages were introduced in EverWeb, creating a custom navigation was kind of arduous since adding a new page required that the updated HTML had to be copied and pasted to every page of the site. Now it's just a question of adding a link to the HTML in the master page.

I was suggesting that you use Google to search for the info.

It seems that we have gotten off-topic. All I was asking was can I add an external link to a directory drop down menu. All it appears to add are local pages that are created under a particular directory.

I think the simple answer is you can't do what you want in Everweb using the default navigation generator. You need to create a custom one using an HTML snippet and adding CSS to the head code box for styling. The posts above were trying to direct you to sites that can help. If you haven't been to Roddy's everwebcodebox site yet, you should give it a visit. Lots of useful information there.

Jim, thanks for the button generator link. I just bookmarked it.
