HTML tutorials

User: Yelena 11 years ago
I personally would very much appreciate tutorials on HTML,CSS,etc. I would love to know where goes what and in what order. For example, I created paragraphs style sheet, inserted it into Head code and placed an HTML Widget on the page. But the paragraph text stopped publishing. I am sure I did something wrong since I am doing these things intuitively...It would be great to have good instructions.

I tried this one when I wanted to learn the basics:

The instructor is quite fast at times, especially with typing, but alas - you can pause and rewind the video ;)

I guess I mean how to use these things in EasyWeb specifically. Because it is somewhat different than in IWeb.

Oh, sorry. Well, maybe Roddy can provide a tutorial? Or maybe there's a chapter in the EasyWeb manual once it's released?

Yes, I am sure it will be there some day...:) And it is not that I need it right now, I can manage quite well. It would just be great to know the proper way of doing things...

Although it's simple to enter code into EasyWeb you really need to learn the structure of an HTML doc and the basic methods and rules of applying CSS and java script to be able to use this feature successfully.

Already I have seen quite a few examples of users pasting code into EasyWeb with little or no understanding of the basics.

It took me a little time to adapt to code injection since it is slightly different from straightforward coding in some respects. In time, I'm sure there will be instructions for this sort of thing but, in the meantime, it would be better to use properly documented examples.

Rather than use a slider like Wow, why not try Galleria. It has excellent documentation and is free if you use the default theme.

The beginners guide is also an excellent tutorial on what scripts to put where...

http://galleria.io/docs/getting_started/beginners_guide/

I have done a fair amount of customization of Galleria for clients so I should (in theory) be able to help if you get stuck or need certain features.

I will check Galleria but in the meantime I was able to successfully use WOW - I followed their instructions for inserting code and it works great. Why WOW? Because it is very customizable and because I have used it a lot and know how to do it.

The basics of HTML,CSS and such - as applied to EasyWeb - that is exactly what I would love to have a tutorial for...

Most of the website owners I do custom stuff for don't want to have to pay for a license for just one or two sliders on one website and obviously don't want the Wow branding on their site.

Galleria is a lot more user customizable than Wow and, if you know CSS, you can create your own themes. There are so many good jQuery sliders out there that I don't know why anybody would want to pay for Wow.

Note that the free version of Wow is only for non-profit sites which is why I have no use for it. You need a license if you are promoting a business or service. See this page...

I am not selling anything so I don't mind the logo...:)...Having said that...Quote:

Well, that is exactly the point. If I knew CSS,HTML,etc I would be a professional designer, not a successful, professional musician and an amateur web designer.:) But again, I am actually very curious about all these things and am looking into different options. The attraction of IWeb was that one COULD make decent websites with no technical knowledge. And EasyWeb is geared towards the same crowd mostly.

A good tutorial on basics of code insertion into EW would be spectacular. Otherwise there is a lot of confusion...For example, for inserting WOW slider both in their directions and per EW instructions I was trying to insert all things into "the same folder" but it didn't work. By trial and error I discovered that some parts need to be in WOW Folder and some in the main Folder of the site. Why? No clue - but now it works. The same goes for music...

Also, as I mentioned somewhere before, the External Files that I see in my EasyWeb do NOT get published into a Folder on my computer. I do upload them manually. Is this a bug or is this how it is supposed to work???

As long as you have linked to them in the HTML, any files will be published to the ewExternalFiles folder.

Galleria looks quite good indeed.

But how would I do this:

Quote:
Now that we have an HTML template and jQuery in place, it's time to install Galleria itself! Download the latest version from the Galleria website. Extract the galleria.zip file and place the "galleria" directory where you have your HTML files.

I still don't know how to achieve that.

Upload it where your files are... In my case (I publish to a Folder on my computer) it is the Folder that contains all the files.

Well, I do publish to the EasyWeb Server, so I don't have control over folders and things other than the assets within EasyWeb. Unless we get an FTP feature to directly access our space on the EasyWeb server, this will remain a problem.

Drag your images, thumbs and the following files into to Assets and link to the .js and .css files in the usual way...

[1] galleria-1.2.9.min.js
[2] galleria.classic.min.js
[3] galleria.classic.css
[4] classic-map.png
[5] classic-loader.gif

Items [2] to [5] are in the themes/classic folder. The map and loader images just need to be in the same folder as the CSS file.

Right, I'll try that when I get home. Thanks Roddy.
