Creating the Directory

User: Guest 12 years ago
Haven't yet figured out how to use the Directory to create submenus. Have checked out the video and manual but am still not clear on what I need to do.

My aim is to reduce the number of items going across horizontally in the Navigation Menu. I thought the Directory might offer a solution. I'm not using an official template but wondered if I could merely copy existing pages that I created at first with a blank page-without a template. (Like making a template in iWork Pages...)

So now I've got two copies of my normal pages which I'd like to use as templates. The Add Directory button at the lower left wants me to select a Template. Can I drag my two copied pages listed in the column at the far left onto the list of Templates, thus making them Templates-or do I need to go into the blank template and create a new one, dragging data from my copied pages?

Also not sure what I do once I've selected a Template or is that merely a question of point and click?

Finally, to sum up (in case what I've written is murky), I want to have a Nav Menu header that says something like "More info," or "Resources" with nothing else but two submenu pages (similar to my other pages which I created from scratch) with resources titled something like "Sounds" and "Words."

Thanks-- John

You need to think of a directory as a folder rather than a page.

When you create a directory, choose a blank white page and don't add any content to the page in EasyWeb since visitors would not normally see it. EasyWeb creates this page as an index.html file within the directory folder. Visitors would normally hover over the directory entry in the navigation and then move the cursor down to select a page within this directory - not actually click the directory entry.

Once you have created the directory, drag a copy of your template page into it and duplicate as many times as necessary.

If you want to avoid having your visitors go to this blank page if they inadvertently click the directory name in the navigation menu, paste this code into the Head Code box in the Page inspector of the blank directory page....

<meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0;url= page-name.html" />

... where "page-name.html" is the file name of the first actual page in the directory. Then, if a visitor does click the directory name in the menu, they will be redirected to the first page in the directory.
