This just prevents the directory listing from appearing within the web browser.

This results in a blank white page rather than forwarding to the index.html.

Well the only way someone would find this page is if they actively went looking for it. It wouldn't be possible for a regular user to stumble on this page so I don't think any forwarding is really necessary. It is only meant to prevent someone from seeing what scripts or images are on the server.

What I do on other servers is to put a copy of the website index.html file into folders of assets. That way, if anybody tries to get to the contents, they get the home page instead.
