Viewing Easy linking

Easy linking

Two years ago, realizing that Sandvox would soon go extinct, I researched a wide variety of website editors and eventually settled on WordPress as the best fit for my website. My website is quite large, comprising nearly 2,000 pages of text and a similar number of images. (I've been building it since 1997.) I hired a specialist to convert my website over to WordPress, paying her nearly $4,000 for the task. Only after she was done did I discover the fatal flaw in WordPress: its procedure for adding a link to a page is horrendous. If you want to set up a link, you must scroll through a menu containing every other page on the website. I was none too thrilled about the prospect of scrolling through a menu 2,000 entries long. I asked for help on the WordPress forum, but nobody had any ideas. I had to abandon WordPress; there went $4,000. 😖

I am once again contemplating a replacement for Sandvox. I have already accommodated myself to the fact that I'll have to convert my website from Sandvox format to the new website editor format by hand, moving page by bloody page. But I refuse to accept the idea of inserting hyperlinks by hand. Sandvox has the most elegant scheme for inserting hyperlinks that I have ever seen; it's a genuine drag-and-drop solution to a knotty problem. I have messed around with EverWeb, and I like its look and feel, but I cannot figure out how hyperlinks are inserted into the text. The manual is vague on this point. It says:

Quote:
You can choose to link one of your website pages by selecting ‘One of My Pages’, and then choosing the page that you want to link to from the second drop down menu.

Crucial question: is that 'second drop down menu' a single long menu containing every page on the website, or is it a hierarchical menu reflecting the structure of the website?

Hi Chris,

Thank you for reaching out.

I just sent you an email with instruction on how to create hyperlinks in EverWeb.

You can reply to a support ticket if you have any questions.

Thanks much! I watched all four videos, and it appears that the linking process uses only a single-level menu, which means that I would face the same problem I faced with WordPress. I went through many of the websites shown on your customer websites page and the majority are pretty small -- a few dozen pages at most. I did find a few with a lot of pages: a high school in Hawaii and a website about the music group ABBA. But none of them came close to the size of my website, which tells me something important: my own site is so abnormal that I should not expect there to exist any website editor than can handle it elegantly. Still, I will keep EverWeb in mind for that dark day when Sandvox finally expires.

Thanks again for the help!

Hi Chris,

Just to let you know, we are working in improving this UI very soon.

Also, when you select the hyperlink menu with all the pages you can actually start typing the name of the page you want to link to and it will be auto selected for you.

You can try it yourself with the demo.

Hope this helps!

Thanks,

Chris -
I maintain the Hawaii School website. It started off predominantly for photos and has changed a lot in the past 12 years, but remains graphic intensive. If Paul says they are improving it - it'll come. The hint on typing the name it auto-selects is a good one. But yes, it can be a pain but no web program answers all needs. It no longer bothers me except for some of the 12-14 page blogs that cover a long reunion group trip. Even then linking is the least amount of work. If your pages frequently change links then you do have a real problem and may want to give some thought to a redesign of everything.

I'd go with EverWeb and wait for Paul's group to work on it. They are extremely reponsive to things than can be improved. The only thing I dislike in EW is the blog system. I had build my own system while waiting for EW's to come out and and don't want to swap over to it. I find it limiting in layout and its archival system. Otherwise - a winner.
To me it's worth the gamble. It's better than anything else I've seen, it constantly gets better, support is 10+ and as you say - you'll be forced to make the change sometime.
