Viewing Glitch with PayPal widget

Glitch with PayPal widget

User: Bernard D. 3 years ago
I have a problem with the PayPal widget that I can't get through to support. They just keep telling me to go to PayPal and get the code. But I can't go to PayPal and get the code because I have not got a PayPal Merchant account. I don't want a PayPal Merchant account because it locks me into using one email address.
I want to use the email addresses of the sellers who are individual separate people.
So the problem is that the widget does not count off the sales.
When you add a number into the quantity field in Product Options, witch produces a dialogue box on the live screen it is possible to sell in excess of that figure.
So this means when you are selling an individual item it is possible to be paid by more than one purchaser for that item. This means that the dialogue box on the live screen is a How many the purchaser wishes to buy box and has no relation to the quantity available in the Product Options setup.
OK some will suggest that I use a third party shopping cart programme. But these programmes will also lock me in as the Merchant which is not want I want.
Any suggestions or fixes would be appreciated.

Hi Bernard,

I think for this you would need a bespoke solution. All PayPal accounts have a merchant ID as they can all receive money (i.e. sellers receive money). As a Buyer you don't need a PayPal account and so will not use a merchant ID.

The widget has to have an email address to be able to link to PayPal so that the widget can interact with PayPal. It does not have to be the account's default email address. You can tell PayPal to use another email address e.g. you could have info@mycompany.com as your PayPal default account email address linked to your Merchant ID, but you tell PayPal that for transactions to use sales@mycompany.com instead.

You can't get round this. You have to have a merchant ID if you are receiving money from buyers. From PayPal's support forum:

"All PayPal accounts, regardless of Personal or Business, will have a merchant ID as all accounts are capable of receiving payments"

Yes a third party shopping cart program may be a better way e.g. Square or SumUp or Stripe. Therefore, you should ask each company if what you want is possible.

I hope it helps.

Thank you for your reply Admin,
But a couple of points have been missed.
Yes, I do need a bespoke solution. Yes, a Merchant account with Pay Pal will let me use two emails. No, I do not need or want a Pay Pal account because I am not the merchant/seller.

Let me try and explain again.
I have a web site where I offer to sell stuff for people.

Mary Moody likes the site and submits one item of stuff. I list the stuff on the site and use the EW PayPal Widget for the payment portal. Mary's email is entered as the recipient of the funds moodymary@aol.com. ( you will see that this is not my email address. )

Then Donald Friendly likes the site and submits one item of stuff. I list the stuff on the site and use the EW PayPal Widget for the payment portal. Donald's email is entered as the recipient of the funds friendlydonald@aol.com. ( you will see that this is not my email address. )

The above scenarios are repeated ad infinitum, resulting in hundreds of email addresses being listed for different lots of stuff in a EW PayPal Widget on the same site.

Ted Unlikely, opens the site and likes Mary’s stuff, clicks on the BUY NOW button and pays for the stuff.
Mary is slow to inform me that the stuff has been sold.
Next day Ted’s cousin Verrie opens the site and likes Mary’s stuff, clicks on the BUY NOW button and pays for the stuff.
So we have a situation where one item is sold twice, a problem for Mary if she is honest she has to make a refund.

Here is a potential fix for this glitch.

Coding is added to the widget that runs a check after the BUY NOW button is clicked and before a link with PayPal is initiated. The check would be to look at the ID. field and if it has been used before it would return an item sold message to the enquirer.
In the event of multiples of the same stuff being listed it would count down the number.
So if the ID. field entered equals MM120421 this could only be used/sold once.
If the ID. field equals MM130421 and the Number Available field equals 12 this stuff could be used/sold 12 times.

I look forward to your reply.
