Incremental Updates

User: Tony R. 4 years ago
Can someone explain the conditions under which a website updates incrementally (uploading only those things I have changed) compared to when the entire site is re-loaded. I seem to be getting inconsistent behaviour. Sometimes a small change updates incrementally as expected, and other times it re-loads the entire site for what looks like the same type of change.

Hi Tony,

In the latest version of Everweb (currently 2.9.1), these will trigger a publish all;

1. Adding/deleting or rename a page that is in the navigation bar. (Tip: from the new page window when you select a template, there is an option to not add to the Navigation bar which will prevent an entire site from being published since nothing will be added to the nav bar

2. Changing a Master page will re-publish all pages that use that Master Page.

3. Moving a page that is in the navigation bar

If you find other cases, please let us know and we will see if it is a bug and we can fix it

Thanks Paul. Terminology Question: what do you mean by the Navigation Bar? Is this the Navigation Menu across the top of the page (from the Master page), or something else? I have pages which don't appear in the Navigation Menu (or any Dropdown Menus), but I realise I have not unchecked the "include page in Navigation Menu" option for them. Will duplicating one of these pages cause a full update, because EverWeb then thinks the Navigation Menu has changed (even though this page does not actually appear in the menu)?

The Navigation Widget that appears under the 'Widgets' tab is added to most websites automatically. You can remove it but you will also see an option under Inspector->Page Settings 'Include page in navigation bar'. Changing this option, even if you are not using the built in Navigation Widget will cause the entire website to be published.

Likewise if this option is selected for a page and you move or rename the page, the whole site will be published again.

Yes, this could be the issue you are seeing. We can definitely see about improving this, but in the current version of EverWeb, this will be the case.
