Getting listed on Google - not mobile friendly.

User: Susan S. 4 years ago
We've been trying for months to get this site on Google. We uploaded the file Google tells us too, we have a site map from Sitemap Automator. Google validated it all.

Now today I check again, nope still not listed and now they are telling me the site is not mobile friendly. We have a mobile site, made with Everweb. So what's the problem?

I do have a problem with the mobile menu, I thought it was supposed to turn into a hamburger menu automatically and it's not (another issue I guess).

But why isn't google figuring out I have a mobile site too? Attached is what I get from the Google Webmaster tools. Thanks for any help.

Hi Susan!

Thank you for the detailed report!

"Viewport". To remove this error, you may try using our Responsive design feature which sets viewport correctly. However, this report is optional and doesn't affect your website workability or visibility. "Viewport" means that the page would adapt to any screen size, which is a recent feature in EverWeb. The separate mobile page is a more classical approach in EverWeb, it's called adaptive design, and it is Google-friendly as well.
See more for Responsive design: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cV7x7Z6sGHg

"Text too small to read". This issue may be corrected if you increase text size on your separate mobile page.

You may also click "View tested page" on your screenshot, and take a screenshot of it, and send it to us in the ticket - it will help!

If you have further questions, could you please submit a support ticket? In particular, I would appreciate more details on the hamburger menu issue. Log in to the Client area and click the blue button "Open New Ticket" on the Welcome page. Direct link: https://billing.ragesw.com/submitticket.php
I'll take it from there and will do my best to help you!

Alex

I managed to fix the hamburger issues! But the text size on the mobile site is 24 so its already quite large, so I don't think that's the issue.

I do want to try making a responsive site... I started one but couldn't make it work the way I wanted it too. One of the things I love about Everweb is the amount of control I have over how things look and it seems like I give some of that up making it responsive.

I guess I need to play with it more but a question related to what we are talking about originally here. If I make a responsive site, does it automatically increase the text size when someone is looking at it on a mobile?

Thanks, Susan

The problem with the text size is probably due to the fact that made your mobile site 480px wide as recommended by EverWeb. If you take iPhones alone, their widths range from 320px for the smallest one in portrait mode to 734px for the largest one in landscape mode.

If you create a page with a fixed width of 480px - and don't use the viewport meta tag - the content will be squashed down and the font size reduced to the point where it is difficult to read when viewed on the 320px wide screen of an iPhone SE.

If you don't want to make your main site responsive, you should at least consider making the mobile version responsive.
