Two presales questions: Soundcloud and site overview in sidebar

User: Ole V. 5 years ago
Hi,
does Everweb automatically embed SoundCloud links?
Also: I have started trying out the demo, and wonder how one goes forth to create a global sidebar menu (appearing on all pages) with links to all the relevant pages on the site, like eg shown in the attached picture. Anyone? Thanks!

There will be a new widget for creating a SoundCloud player available when EverWeb V2.8 is released. It can be created with a maximum width, full width or stuck to the bottom of the browser or device window. See the Demo.

There are lots of widgets for creating vertical navigation menus. For example, here's one that indicates the current page and has a hover animation and a two level, accordion style menu.

To have them appear on every page of the site, it's easier to insert it on a master page. If you are new to EverWeb, you will find the list of instructional videos HERE.

Hi Ole!

Under each SoundCLoud track, you can see "Share" button: https://snag.gy/MlZVnB.jpg
Click it, and then select Embed. Configure anything you need in the resulting Window: https://snag.gy/it7p6G.jpg
Copy the resulting Code.
After that, go to EverWeb, find HTML snippet in Widgets tab. Place the widget somewhere on your page. The code window should appear to the right: https://snag.gy/L0rSie.jpg
If it doesn't, select the widget, go to Inspector > Widget settings.
Paste your code to the code window and click Apply.

The problem with using the SoundCloud embed code is that the result takes up so much space. Better results can be obtained using the code with these mods...

<iframe style="width:100%;height:180px;border:0;overflow:hidden" src="https://w.soundcloud.com/player/?url=https%3A//api.soundcloud.com/tracks/79493697&color=%23000000&visual=false&show_teaser=false&auto_play=false"></iframe>

Change the ID for a different track and the hex color number to change the play/pause color - both marked in bold. Change auto play to true if you must.

Thanks for the info. I guess most artists/composers would prefer a display which shows more than just the song name. Personally, I prefer Soundcloud's standard display. Will this or any other widget function allow that by just pasting the Soundcloud link, the same way eg forums like the XenForo based ones are doing automatically?

The problem with the SoundCloud player is that its so ugly an dated and no use for SEO since all the data is on the SC page and not your own.
Its much better to use a playlist player where you can insert the track title. artist name and other info for both the search engines and the visitors and and have the option of a download or buy link.

I do have a widget somewhere for inserting the SoundCloud embed code. I will try to find it and convert it to responsive.

Thanks, Roddy.

A final noob question for now... I have now bought EverWeb and even experimented with the 2.8 demo, but wonder what the fastest workflow is for a simple, responsive page containing mainly text and images (and some embedded YouTube and Vimeo link.

Should I based this on a number of FlexBox widgets? Or the Text Section (which also may contain images)? Or something else? OR a Responsive Row with TextBoxes and the Image Slider along with the using the Responsive Image Gallery widget?

Thanks in advance.

The Flexbox widget is a kind of "catch all" item which tries to do a lot of things. I find it a lot easier to use specific responsive widgets for creating page layouts.

I set up an empty directory folder containing two blank pages - a template page and an FUI (Frequently Used Items) page. Probably my most used items are ...

Responsive Text and Auto Footer which can be seen on THIS page.

Text Wrap Image which can be seen HERE.

Responsive Styled List on THIS page.

If you are going to use a slider, use a lazy loading one like THIS so that mobile visitors don't have to download all the images if they don't view them.

If you want a professional looking image gallery with features, try THIS one.

Any time I need a new directory I can duplicate the directory folder. Any time I need a new page, I can duplicate the template page, copy over any items I new from the FUI page and then rename it and drag it to its required location in the list of pages.

Creating the demo pages fo ther EverWeb Widgets site and its predecessors requires literally hundreds of pages. Setting up and styling the FUIs saves a huge amount of time in the long run.

Thanks again, Roddy. I have worked with the 2.8b for a week, after having been told that it was dully usable - but in my opinion, it isn't. It needs to be more stable and get an overall easier workflow IMO.
I read this in one of the links you send me:

"These widgets are for using with EverWeb V2.8 and above for creating fully responsive web page layouts which adapt to all device types so that only one version of the site needs to be made to create a good user experience on computers, laptops, tablets and mobile phones.
NOTE:These widgets do NOT require the use of the EverWeb Responsive Row widget. They are so much easier to use with no learning curve. Just drag a widget onto the page and enter your data! "

I tried to add your interesting widgets (only the responsive ones) to the cart, and the price is $225. That's a high sum for making an $80 app work better. But I like the idea of not having to keep adding responsive rows, and also had some problems with not being able to embed elements into those rows, or even get a good overview of where all my "rows" were + had a number of situations with unexpected behaviour. So your concept sounds good... thanks again, I might get back to some of your widgets when 2.8 is stable enough for real use.

EDIT:
I have again looked through many of your widgets, and there's lots of good stuff there.
But are they all usable with 2.8, when it's out? Are some of them mainly made for pre-2.8 versions, and not needed with 2.8?

The widgets are divided into two main categories - one for creating fixed with sites using EverWeb V2.2 and up and the other for creating responsive layouts using EverWeb V2.8.

The EverWeb users who create client sites buy a lot of widgets because they allow them to quickly insert items requested by clients that would normally require a lot of time the use of code insertion.

The average user would only need one of the basic packs to get started developing a responsive site and then add more as they require specific items.
