Viewing Background image size

Background image size

User: Steve F. 5 years ago
Hello everyone,

Has anyone any thoughts on what sort of size a background image should be on a scale to fill basis? My site is 960 pixels wide, and the depth varies from page to page.
My background is a mesh pattern, jpeg, 1781x1000 pixels used horizontally. I can see the image ok, but the mesh is a little oversized on some pages due to a variation in depth.

I could use it as is, but I'd like to make it better if I could by increasing the size (presumably) but don't want to use a file that is so large it causes problems. It is 5.1Mb open in Photoshop, 1.8Mb closed.

If anyone has an opinion on this I'd be delighted to hear it. Many thanks.

Background images really aren't a good idea since they take too long to render and slow the page download time.

If you have a repeating background you can use a tiny image and repeat it on the X and Y axis like THIS.

Nice, Roddy. But, if I'm interested in using a background image, what's the best, manageable size for Steve's example? I know when uploading images, EW pops up a notice warning of bloat and offering a reduction process. I'm guessing it's converting images from print depth (300+ dpi) to screen depth (72 dpi).

Most surfers don't extend their browser window to more than about 1500px wide so, to maintain good quality, the background image needs to be no wider than about 1600 to 1800 px. You can actually get away with much less since the image doesn't need as much quality as one in the foreground.

Try different image sizes and see which gives the best combination of reasonable quality and download speed.
