How do I "up" my spam filter?

User: Daniel B. 6 years ago
Hi, All,

I love EverWeb, but I am getting spammed to death through my email that reaches me through my EverWeb-hosted website. Other hosts have not given me this problem.

Is there a way to "up" my spam filter, to make it judge incoming messages more harshly? Honestly, I feel like I spend half my time marking as "junk" the Russian bride offers that get through Everweb's spam filter.

I interact with my email through MacMail, and have don all I can with that to tweak my junk mail settings there. Shouldn't EverWeb be my first line of defense?

Is there a setting I can change on EverWeb, or any other solutions?

Thank you!

Hi Daniel,

I looked at the email accounts you have with us and it looks like you don't have domain privacy protection enabled. This means that anyone can see your personal information in the public domain database. You can search for yourself here;

https://whois.icann.org/en/lookup

This would have to be added with the company you purchased your domain from, which looks to be Godaddy.

That will be the number one source of SPAM.

This protection is highly recommended.

After you do that, if you still are receiving spam we can definitely enable stricter spam policies for your account but I believe doing the above will cut down on almost all the spam.

Thanks, Paul,for the super-quick and supoer-helpful response!

I did what you said with GoDaddy. They also siuggested a captcha on my website. Is there a contact form widget with captcha you recommend? Thank you!

Hi Daniel,

For the captcha you can use something like http://www.jotform.com

This blog post will explain how to use JotForm with EverWeb in more detail.

I Have ID Protection enabled and have had for a long time but I get spammed to death. It's really quiet problem. Daniel (OP) did you have any luck with rectifying the issue for yourself?

Email addresses harvested by scraping software are more likely to come from email links or buttons on your website than from the contact form.

I recently made a widget for making the email address unreadable by this type of software.

If you are inundated with spam, you need to change the web mail address and also consider forwarding it to a Gmail address before picking it up on your Mac. Forwarding to Gmail adds another very efficient spam filter.

Hi Roddy, thanks for the advice. You're right the Gmail setup works and I was using that for a year or so. I've since reverted to for one reason or another. I've started using the blacklist function on the webmail so maybe that'll help. I do have a contact form on the website rather than an email button but I'll certainly check out your widget, sounds good.

Hi Daz,

I have enabled extra SPAM protection for your account. If you continue to have any issues, please open a ticket with support and we will investigate further for you and hopefully reduce the SPAM you are getting.
