Viewing Will Everweb Work for Me

Will Everweb Work for Me

User: Mark L. 6 years ago
My web application is the documentation of a sizable historical relic collection. Each item is documented on it's own web page. The set of web pages is organized into a number of categories. Each item requires it's own image gallery/ light-box. Each item also logs comparable items that have been found on the web with documentation that could be live web pages, Safari webarchives, pdf files, etc.

The web site will never go live on the internet, it is only published locally on the file system.

It was initially implemented in iWeb. I have a partial implementation in WordPress, but starting a local server to view the website and management of resources is problematic.

I'm interested in feedback from folks who know EverWeb. Thanks

Hi Mark,

If you used iWeb to do what you want, you can definitely use EverWeb as they are very similar, just EverWeb has more features :-)

You can download the free trial version and try it out for yourself.

Let me know how it goes!

Will the trial version allow me to publish something to the local file system so I can try things out?

I downloaded the trial version. I see that I can use "preview" to interact with the web site. I will have 1000s of assets. My first question is that the "asset management" appears to have minimal organizational capabilities. It looks like a running list of assets with no provision to create a hierarchy of asset classes or use my own asset metadata to organize the assets. Am I missing something?

EverWeb divides assets into two sections - images and other file types.

If you have a large number of assets there are a couple of ways to manage them. If you are using a sever other than the EverWeb one, you can upload folders of assets and link to them using relative file paths.

Using the EverWeb server is much easier so the best way to go is to divide the site into two or more projects and publish these as directories or sub sites. That way, the number of assets can be kept to a mangeable level.

The EverWeb Widgets site is created using 12 (and counting) project files to allow the sections to be manageable and not get overloaded with assets.

Before you start creating a large site it's best to create a wireframe showing the main sections and their contents to figure out the best way to create the structure and navigation.
