Viewing Lost… so so very lost

Lost… so so very lost

I downloaded the free trial. Watched the videos, seems easy enough. But as soon as I sit down to actually try this, I can't get past start.

First, save…. WHERE DOES IT GO?????? I do NOT want this saving to some cloud. I want what I do on MY COMPUTER.
But there is no save as, or any place I can see where this is going. I'd like everything I'm doing into one folder. This should be easy.

Second, I started with one of the templates. First thing I wanted to do is change the BG color. And I can't find a single video that talks about color. I could swear I watched one a few days ago. I use hex codes. WHERE does one enter a simple hex code? And HEX means SIX. I never figured out three digit codes. I use a web safe maroon #990033 and I can't figure out for the life of me where to enter that. OR can I sample off my existing site?

Re watching videos… at the bottom of the window (work space not the video) there are a bunch of tool icons. Only on mine nothing is showing up there.

Then… is one suppose to generate navigation first? THEN create the home page once there is something to navigate to?
I just don't know where to start. I'm sure once this sinks in it will be simple. Sure will beat hand coding. But I'm lost.

I gotta just walk away from this. Not good with frustration. Tons more questions piling up but will see what these simple ones are first.

Edited; ok, found the video on changing background color BUT…. still no clue where to enter a hex code. Just eyeballing the color isn't good.

Your project is saved to file in the Application Support folder of your user library. Open the Projects Window from the EverWeb File meu and you will see your project listed. Click the little up/down arrows to the right of the project name and you will see the options to show it, make a backup etc.

On later versions of EverWeb, the toolbar is at the top.

Once you create a page you can name it and add it to the navigation using the Page inspector. To add the navigation menu to a page or master page, drag it from the Widgets panel onto the design canvas.

To use hex color numbers, click on the Colors icon at the top right of the toolbar ans select the Color Sliders section. At the bottom right of the window you will see a box to enter color numbers.

Just to clarify here, you can go to Inspector->Page Settings (first tab) and click the Page or Browser background option. When you click the button to change the colour there is a field to enter the hex value. You have to type the hex color in there, copy and pasting it may not work at the moment.

As Roddy mentioned your project files are saved to your applications folder. You can save them to the cloud if you wish too though. There is a video for using dropbox with your project file.

The navigation bar is made automatically as you add pages. Under the Inspector->Page Settings you can include a page in the navigation bar and change the navigation bar text if you like. The navigation bar widget can be dragged from the Widgets tab to any page and it will include any page that has 'Include in navigation bar' selected.

Also as Roddy mentioned, the toolbar was recently moved from the bottom to the top of EverWeb.

Ok on the color, not the same as in photoshop but I got it now.

Ok on the moving of the tools. I suppose if I zoom in on videos I can see what tool icon they are showing and find it.
Thanks guys,

Now… saving. before I spend ANY more time on this, I seriously have to know exactly where my files are. I can't back them up if I can't find them.

On a mac here, click the mac icon, looking under applications. NOTHING in there is remotely close. There is no "everweb" and there is no library in applications.

SO back to the mac icon. Click this time under Library. Again NOTHING in there is remotely close to everweb, my site name, or user stuff other than photos.

Back to the mac icon. There is a users folder, following the ONLY available path it reads like this.
mac/users/shared/libraery/application support/adobe/air

Again those are the only choices. NO long list of stuff and this thing isn't in there either.

So WHERE is it going other than right in the applications icon under recent projects? I can't even drag one of those out?

Last time.. NO NO NO NO NO on any clouds. (gotta be the stupidest invention ever. Hard drives are cheap. NO bandwidth wasted and no relying on someone else's hardware, or security or lack thereof.) I want my files on my device until I'm ready to buy the software and upload to my web host.

Ok, found the video on backups. What a convoluted thing. And I'm not sure but it appears the video is only showing how to save to a cloud or "drop box." I DO NOT WANT THAT! The video also says you can save to your computer or external HD but does not specify how.

I tried this. Created a folder on my desktop. With everweb running, and one of my practice new sites up, I opened preferences, clicked back up, selected backuplocation, went back to my test site, clicked save, went to my new folder, a file is in there but when I try to open it I get "cannot find the application."

This is just nuts!!!!! Saving anything should NOT be such a pain. What happened to "save as" and let ME pick where my files go?

Also the auto save thing…. Don't need or want that. I know how to click save as I go. And sure do NOT want something auto saving if I'm in the middle of screwing something up. Once I get something working, I save. Gees been doing photoshop for years. I know the importance of saving. And know how. And it's never been by going through preferences either.

So are my files savable other than within the app or not?
If not this could be a deal buster. My site is huge and is about to double in size. I need to know it's backed up, likely in multiple places.

HI Jenny,

Saving is done automatically to your Library folder. Your Library folder is NOT in your applications folder. It is a hidden folder on your computer with your system files.

If you open the projects window you can click the little arrows next to the project and select Show on Disk.

It will open the project file in your Finder.

If you move the project file out of that location it will not appear in Projects Window anymore. But you can double click it, or drag it onto the EverWeb icon, to open that project.

The backup files can be opened by dragging and dropping them onto the EverWeb icon as well if your computer is giving you trouble when you double click them. HOWEVER, the backup files shouldn't be used as Saving your project.

You can turn off auto save in the preferences in EverWeb as well.

Ok, had to walk away from this for a bit. Thought this time I'd just follow the videos, pausing and doing what ever they are doing right along. Only way this will sink in.
And already, "add a page" they are showing tools along the BOTTOM of the screen. I know someone said tools have been moved, but now WHERE is the add page icon? I can't find the same tools anywhere.

Also trying to simply move a text/shape from the center of the page to the top, it appears the top and bottom are header and footer pages? So how would one edit those? They don't show up on the left. Only the one page I have opened shows up.

GEES if they moved tools around someone needs to update the videos.

edit, duh, found add page upper left corner. Add directory though is grayed out. And still no clue where header and footer pages are.

Ok, found the video on master templates. "You'll note here that the page has an M in front of it."
Well no…. Mine has a red dot. NO M. Is this also something that has been changed since the videos were made available? Or am I totally not in the right place here?
User: Roddy 6 years ago
The EverWeb user interface has had a fairly radical overhaul since that video was produced.

The red dot means that the page has been updated since it was last published.

So what happened? Did you bail or did you get things working like the rest of us? You can't leave us in suspense! It's like someone just changed the channel halfway through the soap opera!
