Viewing Video not playing on an IPad

Video not playing on an IPad

User: Yelena 9 years ago
I have a video on the opening page of the website ( used EW video, Roddy's MP4 video widget and Roddy's Big Video). None of them play on an IPad although the video will play on an IPhone and Android phone... Any ideas?

The best type of player for touch devices is one which just requires an MP4 file. It should display a poster image on page load and preload should be set to "none".

Fixed width..

Responsive width.

If you require a uniform appearance to the controls in various browsers, use VideoJS.

Big Video won't work on iPad since it requires autoplay which is not supported in iOS. The Touch version of the Big Video widget has an optional Play/Pause button which will appear when the page is viewed on an iPad.

If you want help to troubleshoot the problem you should publish the video, on its own, on a test page and post the URL.

Thank you, Roddy... It seems that the video actually does play on a newer IPad...

I have another question I keep pondering over.... I usually create a Full Site and Mobile versions. It is simple enough to redirect Full Site pages to a Mobile site. But how does one redirect to a Tablet? This is a mystery to me.... How does a browser distinguish between a mobile phone and a Tablet???

You can create three versions of the site using the TriSite method.

An easier way is to create the full site using the Full Width widgets and the method outlined in this section about Mobile First design.

The full Width Widgets will soon be supplemented by a pack of widgets for making the phone version of the site responsive so that it works properly on the different sizes of mobile phone.

Roddy, I am still struggling with MP4 video... I create a Tablet version and used MP4 video widget with a poster... It won't play on an IPad 2...

You are using the default EverWeb widget and have it set to autoplay. Touch devices like iPads and iPhones don't do autoplay.

The widget shown on THIS page is more suitable since it prevents the video file from preloading.

Roddy, I am using it on the main page but not on the Tablet or Phone versions...I am using your MP4 Video Widget and it is NOT set on Auto Play....Works on IPhone but not IPad 2.... It looks like it is loading but that goes on forever and never plays....
