Browser Background Image Fill not working correctly.

User: Ben L. 7 years ago
I rebuilt a site today. And all day long I have a Browser Background Image. This comes from a Master 'Home' Page, and a Master 'Page' Page. About 8 pages. All afternoon I previewed the different tries of the site ... on three browsers. Everything works fine. Then I published. And there is no Browser Background Image up online in the 'published' version. I've tried maybe ten different variations, including rebuilding the home page from scratch.

I just deleted the entire site online, all files and folders ('Transmit' wouldn't allow me to delete the 'Image' folder, though there was nothing in it).

And re-published the entire site. When I do a 'Preview' of the site to any of three Browsers everything works fine. When I publish online ... there is no Browser Background Image. It's disappeared on ALL the pages. Nothing I can think to do will make it appear online.

Any ideas out there?

You don't mention how you are inserting the background image. It sounds to me as though the path to the image is to a local file. You would need to publish to a local folder and look at the source code to verify that.

There is a widget for inserting a responsive background image using the jQuery BackStretch plugin.

Hi Roddy,

I was just using the EverWeb setup to insert the Browser Background Image. And it WAS working earlier in the day. I'll see if I can understand your suggestion about the path being to a local file. I'm not sure my code skills are up to analyzing source code. I do have all your 'FULL' widgets collection. I'm working on learning what they all do. I did think about using your 'Full Width Image' widget ... but it 'seems' to have only one height, and the image auto cropped to fit that height, and no controls for changing how much of the image to reveal, or what part of the image (no controls as one would have with the Mask), -- I was meaning to ask you about that. I'm going off to check out your 'background image' suggestion (JQuery BackStretch plugin).

Ben

PS ... checked out your suggestion. Will buy the set and try. Actually, I think I may just buy everything. Would like to see if the standard EverWeb function for the Browser Background Image can work though. Waiting to hear back from Damien at support.

The full width image is really meant to be used with a slide over layer. That's why the height is fixed.

Quite a few of the full width widgets have a fixed height to avoid the problem of them expanding to overlap content beneath them at wide browser settings.

Got it. Makes sense. So what I need to do is pre-crop the image to fit that height, right? If I want to control what part of the image is used. What IS that height ... say in the Full Width Image widget? I'm not sure how to measure it, when it moves all the time with the Browser. Actually, what I guess I need to know, is the prime setting for width and height (the default), so that it gives the best results as the Browser window is tugged this way and that.

Okay. Round 2. I published the www.soundtosleep.com site to a folder on my computer. Double clicking open the 'index' file the site opens up in Safari (or Chrome or Firefox) perfectly. Plays perfectly. So I bypass EverWeb's uploading system and use 'Transmit' and upload the contents of the successfully working folder to the web. And I'm STILL not getting Browser Background Image! This is coding stuff I think. Certainly beyond me.

I'm going to rebuild the pages again, using Roddy's widget this time.

Hi Roddy,

Went to try and buy your Image Widgets collection. Your Paypal setup is pretty funky. I used Chrome (not Safari) and it won't accept 3 different credit cards. I had this trouble a few days ago when I bought another collection. I had to keep entering the data, and it would keep telling me they were unable to verify the card. It finally went through the other day, but I can't remember which of the three cards I used. And right now it won't take any of them. The cards are all at zero right now, and credit rating excellent. So I'm wondering what's going on with Paypal.

Roddy, tried three different Browsers on your Paypal setup, with three different credit cards. No go. It won't accept the cards.

Sorry about that. I have reported it to PayPal but other EverWeb users seem to be making their purchases OK.

I have emailed you a copy of the widget.

Thank you kindly Roddy, very generous of you. I'm going to try the Paypal thing again today ... might be a US/Can issue, or the time of day. And I didn't have too much trouble a few days ago - though it did take about three passes to make it work. t want to get ALL your widgets. I was perusing them yesterday. Some wonderful tools in there. My son was giving me a hard time about the 'staidness' of my sites (we're both filmmakers, and websites have become de-rigour for the business). And then I was looking at the 'snappy' new websites out there and thinking how tricky they would be to make ... and poof! I see you have made widgets to do a lot of that very tricky stuff. Wonderful. I will report back shortly ... thank you again... Ben

Hi Roddy,

Ouch. So I shut down the EverWeb protocol for a Browser Background Image ... just clicked 'Color Fill' (the only other choice). Then I added your Background Image widget, dragged it to the footer, clicked Choose Image and chose the appropriate image from the Assets list in Everweb. I previewed it. I can see the Browser Background Image just fine, everything working on all pages. Then I publish it up online. And get a 'color fill' background on all pages, no image. The Background Image I've chosen is a regular jpeg. And so with your widget I'm getting the same weird no-image as I've been getting using the Everweb Browser Background Image. The mystery thickens. The only thing I can think is that there is a corruption somewhere in the project itself. I'm at a loss. ??

Here's your problem.

Click the link :

Copy the URL and then verify it here :

http://www.webconfs.com/http-header-check.php

Tell your webhoster, which I think is Cloudflare, about the problem.

Hint : Remove the %25 ( = % ) character. It may be the problem.

Hi Jumbo T.,

Mmm. A good thought that. I wasn't using my brain when I was cranking out variations of the stills. I think you might be right. Aha! And I thought my solution was that there was a problem with the actual jpeg (that there might be different versions of jpeg's, and this one wasn't happy online) ... and in the process of redoing the jpeg, by creating a screenshot png, then re-exporting as another jpeg (with Preview) ... I gave it a new name. So the problem might have been that errant (and dumb!) % in the title. You are an ace Jumbo T. and I really appreciate this. I'm going back to try the original image (with a careful name change). I'll report back ... and confirm that you've nailed the issue right on the head. Thank you, thank you! Ben
