Everweb Widget Beta Tester

Hello,

I'm addicted to using the widgets on all my projects. Is there any unreleased projects that you need testers for? I'd love to be apart of it. Thanks -

At any one time I probably have between 30 and 50 widgets which are being "developed" and very little time to actually work on them.

Over the past couple of years I have send out a lot of widgets to "testers". The response has ranged from zero through not very helpful to a few that are excellent. Testing widgets requires time which most people who are qualified to do it just don't have. It also requires a knowledge of what works, what is not possible and to resist the temptation to ask for so many features as to make the widget impractical for the average user.

I have created quite a lot of widgets from user suggestions and always send them a copy to test before it is released. The problem is the time involved in interacting with testers. In any one day I answer far more questions via email than the number of questions which appear in this forum in a week. It's amazing how much "support" some peole think they should get for a 50 cent widget.

I do encourage users to ask questions in the forum - rather than email me - so that more people can benefit but I can understand that a lot of people don't like to use a public forum - especially where they can be exposed to sarcasm. Every forum has at least one Troll!

I tend not to impose on those who are good at testing widgets since I don't want them to feel obliged to contribute their time for free in the way that I do. However, if anyone actually wants to do it, and has the time to do it properly, I am willing to give them shot.

If you contact me, I will send you the 500 page application form!

I am actually quite surprised that there aren't more users interested in creating their own basic widgets. For example, I use one which creates the text block with heading that I use on just about every page of the site. The styles are written in a master stylesheet so that the widget only has to insert the HTML. This makes for a much more efficient and faster downloading web page.

I also have one for HTML headings and image insert. I keep a copy of these widgets on a template - as distinct from a master - page which i duplicate as required. It saves a lot of time when dealing with a site with 100s of pages.

Most EverWeb users still haven't got to grips with the modern method of web design using HTML5 content blocks rather than individual headings, paragraphs and images. This makes for far faster page production, better visual design and superior SEO.

Roddy, are you saying that you we can create our own widgets with our own coding? I've looked at the basic file structure of them, the main thing that confuses me is how to make like options and settings to show up on the EW program itself. Also, if we did make our own app and it crashes EW will my mac have a melt down?

The EverWeb widget API is one of the main features which puts the app way out in front of the competition. It allows users with little or no knowledge of code to insert fairly complex items into their web pages.

The Assets List control is really powerful and this allows use to create slideshows and playlist media players. With the addition of a few more basic controls it will open up more possibilities for the future.

To make a widget you need to create the item in a code editor, test it in EverWeb using code injection and create the code which inserts the item and provides the user setting controls. To do this, you would need a working knowledge of HTML5 and CSS3. For more complex items, a knowledge Javascript and jQuery plugins is required.

To create the info file, you would need to be familiar with the widget API and the various controls. You need 100% accuracy with this as even one tiny error will cause the item to fail.

I wasn't suggesting the users should rush off and try to create stuff like slideshows - just that they could learn to create their own master stylesheets and use very simple widgets to insert HTML headings and text rather than use the HTML Snippet. This saves a lot of time in the long run and makes for more efficient, faster downloading web pages.
