Viewing Line Spacing Problem and Solution

Line Spacing Problem and Solution

User: David B. 10 years ago
Hey guys I thought I'd share this with ya'll.

I had a hell of a time trying to put a few rows of lines under a few rows of text. I wanted the lines a certain way so I didn't want to use underlining on the text. Everytime I'd publish it was a little off, I tried for about an hour and realized I had my line height set to 1.23. So, I set it to 1 and bam! I think it was a problem with the decimal or something, but now all spacing is symmetrical. Hopefully some of you that have experienced this problem know what I'm talking about, and it works for you too.

Thanks guys.

There are various ways of expressing line height. EverWeb uses the number system which means that the number you set is multiplied by the font size to specify the line height. It should be obvious that you should never set this to a value of less than one.

If you don't specify a line height, the browser default will be used which is good enough for most uses.

Rather than have to do the math, I use pixels for line height since I am mainly using them for font size. I use pixels for line height in widgets which require this selector such as for adjusting the flow of text wrapping around an image. I find that other users relate to this method rather than any of the other options.

The main priority in website text is readability so - unless you have a good reason - this should be black text on a slightly off white background (#FEFEFE) using Verdana at 15px (16px for the smart phone version) with a line height of no less than 18px. If using Helvetica, increase the font size to 16px and 17px for phones.
