I touched on this in a question I posed in the "how to" part of the forum but it was under another topic so I'm posting here looking for ideas/suggestions.

I'm making a gallery site for an artist. On the page with their work there will be 18 collection categories. You click on one of those categories (like watercolor) and it will take you to that page which will have all the works in that category in smaller images. You click on an image and you will see a much larger version of that piece.

Sounds simple. The artist wants a visitor to be able once they get to a large image, to have forward and back buttons so you can see all of the large pictures in that category without having to return to the small pix page.

I know EW has a slider and gallery however.... I'm worried about loading time. We have 7 categories that have under 10 images in them. So that's easy to manage. But we have 7 more categories that have between 30 and 70 images in them. And 4 categories that have over 100 images in them.

So I don't think I can use the EW slider or gallery page, just too many images. So unless someone has another idea, I'm going to have to build all the galleries. So the large images will be linked with forward and back buttons.

So if I remove and add an image to a gallery there is NO problem, I'd take the image off of page 3 (for example) and add a new image to page 3, all the links still work. The problem is happens when we remove an image (because it sold) from the middle of a gallery. Using the same example from above if the image on page 3 sells, then I remove that page and I have to change the links on page 2 (the forward link because it would be pointing to page 3 and I just deleted that page) and change the back link on page 4.

If I add a brand new piece of art, I'll add it to the very end of the line so I just add a link to what was previously the last page pointing to the new piece of art.

Is this the best way to do this? Does anyone have any other ideas of how to set this up? This artist sells a lot of art so I'm a little worried about the amount of work involved.

Thanks for any brainstorming on this, I really appreciate it.

Perhaps EW is not suited for what you want.

This might do it :

Why can't you use the Image Gallery or Image Slider? They have forward and back links when you click them to show the larger image size. You wouldn't have to do anything when you delete an image, simply republish your site.

I don't know if this would help but on my site I simply use the "next page" link at the top of the list for the art image pages so if a page gets eliminated, it doesn't require relinking. My favorite thing about this is then I can copy/paste the next and previous link as much as I like. Handy.

I'm revisiting this issue. James.... what do you mean you use a "next page" link? Thats exactly what I want to do but when you have a link that says next page... it has to have the URL of that page? How does it know what's next.

Paul - the problem (I think) with a Gallery or Slider is that some collections have 50+ images in them. So the gallery won't play until all the pix load. And each pix in the gallery needs a clickable link for that pix so you can email the artist for info or to purchase. Can I have a clickable link on top of the pix in either a slider or gallery??

The 'next page' link allows you to link to the next page in your page list. So let's say you have the following pages on your site in the following order:

Home
Photos
Videos
Contact

If you are on the photos page, and you place a link using the 'next' option, it will link to the videos page. Likewise, if you link using the 'previous' option, it will link to the home page.

The image gallery does not let you link individual photos to different pages, but the image slider does.

Using the photo gallery/directory method, it sounds like you can accomplish exactly what you are looking for, minus the ability to link the individual photos. Also, it shouldn't take too long to load the gallery so long as the images that are added to it are optimized a bit.
