Hello.
I just need clarification on fonts.
Which fonts work on all devices and software?
I am trying to design my website logo and title.
Problem is a font used in Photoshop is not recognised in Everweb.

See THIS page fo info about fonts and follow the link if you want to find out about self hosting fonts.

Here's an example of a widget which creates a full width header with h1 heading using non web safe or Google hosted fonts and two optional logos which can be created as hyperlinks if required.

The Resize Header widget takes it one step further by allowing the header to resize on scroll.

Other widgets in this pack help to create a more modern, responsive stye look to the full version of the site.

Hello,
I think some of your information is out of date.
There is no "Web-Safe Mac Windows" collection under the font heading.
Is there a list of web safe fonts inside Everweb?

Hi Anthony,

It should be there still but if not the fonts are;

Verdana
Arial
Times New Roman
Helvetica
Comic Sands
Trebuchet

To use Google fonts which will be compatible with all browsers and operating systems you can follow this Google Fonts Tutorial.

And this article explains how to use any Font in EverWeb.

Font collections are user created and EverWeb uses the default Apple fonts window.

Click the + button in the fonts window to add a collection, give it a name and drag the fonts into it from the AllFonts list. The web safe fonts are listed in the page I referred to above.

If you use any other fonts available on oour Mac, they won't render on computers that don't have them installed. They will appear as the browser default which is a serif font - ususally some version of Times. In general, serif fonts shouldn't be used for web design since they are not "user friendly" to those with reading difficulties.

From the readability point of view, Verdana is the best font to use and the minimum font size should be 15px. 14px could be used for the "fine print" but anything smaller will put your layout at risk of distortion by those who set their browser minimum font size to 15 px. If you use Helvetica or Arial, it's better to increase the minimum font size to 16px - especially on the smart phone version of your site.

Hello,
Thank you for the list. I thought it would have been longer.
I have read the "Google Fonts Tutorial" and discovered not all fonts are web-safe.
Must a matter of trial and error.
I know all operating systems and software cannot support all fonts.
Has anybody compiled a list of all google fonts that are web-safe?
Regards

Here is a good explanation about web safe/universal fonts. The ones Paul listed are the base universal/web safe fonts......except when it comes to google based devices. It really comes down to who you want to serve and what you think they are running.

Thanks for the information. you learn something new everyday.
From many thousands of fonts you can only use 5.
You would have thought this would have been sorted out by now.
I need my website to be viewed on pc and mac mainly in US and Japan.
Thanj you for your help.

Google fonts are hosted which means that they are downloaded from a server when the web page is opened in a browser. The downside is that they are being downloaded from a server which is different from the one where the web page files are stored. This means extra server requests which take more time and also use up mobile users' data allowances.

The alternative is to purchase your own fonts and self host them on your own server.

Even out of those 5, Georgia is not supported natively by google, they use their own version for it. So if someone on android device shows up, they get a different font until they load fonts to device. Not sure about the others, I know Georgia since I use it a lot.
In some ways google brings things together, and in other ways they create huge divides (just as they do in this great city they call home).

Am i the only person to think this is all crazy.
Any suggestions/recommendations on what font to use for general use.
This is all confusing.

I work on a couple of e-commerce sites and have chosen to use Verdana for them, due to being supported everywhere and pleasing to the eye for most people. To me, Verdana is an easier to read version of Arial, try Times New Roman for a more 'formal' typed look.

As I pointed out above, from the point of view of readability, the best font to use is Verdana with a minimum font size of 15px.

You can use non websafe fonts if you care to but you should specify a fallback font - or at least the generic group - in the styles. To see what can be done with headings for example, have a look at this widget.

I have also a problem with a typical font from Google ( Open Sans ), added as external file in Everweb
The code is correctly added in the heading part but it doesn't load wel on other machines..
Is there something wrong with this code?

www.realvisuals.eu

<style>
@font-face {
font-family: "OpenSans";
src: url("{!-ASSETSPATH-!}External%20Files/OpenSans-CondLight.ttf");
}
</style>
