Viewing Default Navigation Vertical

Default Navigation Vertical

There doesn't appear to be a vertical option with the new navigation?

No. We may put this in later but for the time being only horizontal.

The vertical option on the old menu worked pretty good. It was just chopping the height of the menu div is all.

Definitely need a Vertical Navigation Option! I needed it tonight. Also having to copy and paste the navigation on each and every page...??? I can't think of a single other web site builder that requires you to that.

The usual way to build a website is to create a template page with the header (including navigation) and footer content that is required on every page. Then duplicate it as required.

@mark: You don't have to copy and paste it onto every page unless the original template you use doesn't have a navigation bar.

Keep in mind, the templates are nowhere near finalized in the current beta.

I never use a template. I always build from a blank page. Couldn't get a vertical navigation menu to work. Guess I could go and just make everything manually in a text box with hyper links but I need something that is going to save me time not make me do extra work. Is there a workaround? Is there a way to make a vertical navigation? And then have it show up on every page and update automatically as new pages are created? In the current way all I can see doing is having to decide on all the pages first then building a navigation using a text box and hyperlinks then copying and pasting it to every page. However then if you decide to move the page order or add a page you have to do it all again manually (update one and then copy and paste to every page).

The site I was trying to build last night was needing to have vertical navigation due to that it was a directory and needed to have around 24 different sections that would then break off into pages single or multiple pages depending on the size of each section.

Horizontal navigation just looks way to overcrowded and confusing for this directory site... a single left handed vertical navigation is what is design appropriate for the directory's content. I was excited to start this project on EasyWeb thinking it'd give me the customization and control over the design that I wanted but no sooner than I got started I decided to look for another platform for this project as I will need to be able to grow the directory with more sections and pages as needed and I'm not about to use a tool that would require so much extra work to do so.

I remember there was vertical navigation before. Hope it comes back.

Just checked out the templates for reference... seems like you have to drag in and customize the navigation using the navigation template... is that right? Navigation is not part of the template design like in iWeb? If this is the case all the more basic iWeb type users will end up with 1990s the beginning of the internet blue underlined navigation on their nice templates (or they'll have no navigation and wonder why). With the templates, a navigation style appropriate to the template should be generate when a new page is added imo. Maybe I'm missing something since I haven't really used the templates... But for what I do unless there are going to be 1000s of themes or templates like in Wordpress, templates won't work for me.

You can achieve the same thing using the default drop down menu. A drop down is essentially a horizontal menu with several vertical menus all in one.

Create a directory for each of the sections of your site and all the pages created inside any directory will appear in the appropriate section of the drop down - automatically.

We will be adding the vertical navigation menu back at a later date.

When building a website, either by using one of the built-in templates, or by starting a site from scratch, you should already have the navigation menu included on the page. This way, you will not constantly have to drag the navigation menu widget onto the page.

The templates in the beta version are not final, so if you come across templates that do not have navigation menus already on them, just know they will have them when EasyWeb is officially released.

If you want a vertical navigation menu, there is a way to do it, though it might not work out perfectly the way you want it to, so some users may opt to build a navigation menu manually.

The navigation menu's width can be adjusted so that each link is on its own and the menu is vertical. You may need to play around with the Padding and Spacing values to get each link on its own line. If you are going to make the nav menu have a background color, you will need to make sure to set the Minimum Width value to something that is slightly larger than the link in the navigation menu that has the most characters. Just click the up arrow on the Minimum Width field and hold it looks right. Note: this vertical nav should not have a line stroke added to it. Also, if you begin adding new pages to the navigation menu, it may throw off the entire look of the navigation menu. Also, you will not be able to align the text center or right. It will need to remain left. You will also not be able to use drown menus.

Just to repeat what was mentioned earlier, this might not work out perfectly for everyone, but if you were looking to make a vertical navigation, it is an option worth trying. The vertical navigation menu will be added back to the navigation menu widget in the future, but for the time being, if this method works for you, then you can still have a vertical navigation.

@Roddy, good info, but all things I already consider and do. I'm all for planing and saving time and SEO. However websites can change and grow. And though I can manually work around not having the Vertical Navigation I won't because it is way too laborious... I need tools that work quickly and efficiently. Your tips on planning will save people time - but like I said I was already doing those things and most people with any real experience are. However one other way I use to use iWeb and would like to use EasyWeb is for working out ideas as well... iWeb was always my go to app for working out ideas and getting mock-up sites up very quickly for clients to see. Even when I knew the end site would be hand coded with HTML, CSS, etc.

Looks like Vertical Navigation will be back at some point anyway. Guess I'll just have to wait until then. Good tips though, glad you shared that. Might be nice if there was a "Best Practices/Tips" section in this forum.

In the iWeb for musicians site which has over two hundred pages I used a horizontal navigation for the main sections and a vertical one for the pages within each section.

http://www.iwebformusicians.com/iWeb/Site-Layout.html

You could use the default navigation for the horizontal and create a vertical one in a text box for the sections. It doesn't take as long to copy and paste in a section as it does the whole site!
