Some thoughts...

User: DALE N. 10 years ago
Hi all –

Before I start, I just want to say what a great piece of software EverWeb is.

I thought I'd put down some thoughts I've had over the past few months. Some are feature requests, some may be bugs and some just general thoughts but apologies for not being able to put these into the correct areas of the forum – I've just been incredibly busy with work and wanted to finally write down everything in one hit.

As a professional designer I work with Adobe software every day but I've never touched a line of code and nor would I ever want to, which is why I chose EW in the first place as it's so similar to the tools I use such as InDesign. For this reason, I think some of the tricks Adobe uses could be utilised in EW if possible.

For instance, it would be great to be able to move a picture round inside a box in the same way it's handled in ID. That would mean the crop could be changed inside EW and not have to be handled outside in something like PhotoShop.

Scaling grouped items by clicking and dragging would be good. Something else I noticed about groups is that when I group a number of items and want to change their position on the page, if I then change the coordinates, the items go to their new position individually and not as part of the group. Surely the point of a group is to manage items together and not separately?

It would be great to have a mini grid of 9 dots in the Inspector pane as ID does, so that the user can select a particular corner or edge of an object and change it's coordinates relative to the corner or edge point selected.

It would also be great to have some grids or to be able to make my own grids up and also to be able to see rulers and to have the ability to turn them on and off. I think grids and rulers are pretty essential elements when trying to make objects line up.

I also noticed (and this was something I mentioned to the EW team a while back) that when I copy and paste text in from Word or Pages the formatting is also imported and even when I select all the text and apply new formatting, fonts, sizing etc sometimes bits of the old formatting still remain. It's really noticeable with linespacing. Even after changing the linespacing then working on other elements on the site, if I go back and check the linespacing, the value box is blank and when I type in the linespacing value again, the text visibly moves a little – even though the actual value should have stayed the same. Maybe a button which deletes all the formatting from previous software would help?

Something else which would be helpful is when text or a box is selected, it's colour is highlighted in the colour pane. Sometimes I have several colours which are very similar in the colour pane and it can be difficult knowing which colour has been applied.

It would be great to have a better way to organise assets, using folders for instance, especially on larger sites..

When an item is duplicated it would be great to have options, for instance where do I want to duplicate the item to and how many do I want to copy. Again this is used in Adobe software as Step and Repeat.

It would be good to have the option to Ctrl or Option click through an object to grab an item behind, rather than move the item on top to be able to see something underneath.

Apologies if these sound like me rambling but as I say I wanted to just get them down on paper as they had been on my mind for some time and whilst some are feature requests, I'm sure some are bugs or potential issues which could be resolved with changes.

Finally, are there any changes in the pipeline to the way responsiveness is currently handled and will breakpoints be added instead of just desktop and mobile options for sizing?

Again, these are just some points I wanted to get down. EW is a great piece of software and I appreciate everything you have done. Great job!

Hi Dale,
In 1.9 you have pick layer when you right click on an object so you can select what is underneath it. It's a small but useful 1.9 addition!

Hi –

That's great, thanks for sharing or I would never have known!

Thank you for your feedback. I will provide some solutions below;

Use this Mask tool in the toolbar to do this.

Yes, that sounds like a bug and I will look into getting it fixed.

Will look into this.

For now the Arrange menu lets you easily line up objects. I will look into a ruler and grid option.

Yes, that is a good idea.

Which color pane are you referring to?

Yes we will be adding better asset organization in a future version.

As previously mentioned, the right click option lets you do this but we will add more keyboard shortcuts for this.

No, the feedback is very much appreciated and is used to make EverWeb better! Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts.

Yes, but keep in mind, always, always always create an optimized mobile site for mobile users. Responsive sites with breakpoints take longer to load, reduce your design flexibility and are more difficult to debug on multiple devices since object positions always change.

Thanks again, let me know if you have anymore feedback for us :)

Hi Paul –

Thanks for responding so quickly and in so much detail, it's great to hear from developers who are so committed and enthusiastic like yourself :-)

The reason I spent so much time thinking about additional features is because I truly believe EW is a great product and I am speaking as a professional designer with over 20 years experience and as someone who has tried multiple web design tools including DreamWeaver, SquareSpace, Webflow, Wix, Weebly, Blocs, Briqs, Sparkle, RapidWeaver, Freeway and many more I can't remember...! For ease of use and flexibility without the restrictions of Bootstrap's grid and container issues, EW gives me the kind of freedom I need to design properly.

Just to clarify your reply to my query on colour:

– When I highlight some text and change it’s colour or draw a shape and fill it with colour, it would be good if the colour I had chosen from the colour palette window was highlighted in some way, for example if it had a bold border, just to show which colour was being used form the many other colours I’ve saved in the colour palette window. So say if I have several blues which are quite similar in the colour palette window and I want to check which blue some text is, currently when I highlight the text the blue isn’t highlighted at the same time in the colour palette window. Does that make sense?

I think the only other point I missed out was how difficult it can be trying to deal with thin lines. I’m not so sure a line needs 4 handles to grab it, just a start and end point as it shouldn’t be treated in the same way as a shape which has 4 corner handles. When I make a 0.5px width line, then try to type in coordinates for it to move to, it moves the corner point to the new coordinates, not the line itself. Again let me know if that make sense.

Looking forward to future versions.

As for the Grid, it has been asked for a few times, here is a thread with a work-around.
For the color selection, if I am reading it correctly, I believe this happens already if it is a preset color. When you click on a colored box, a color selector opens. That color selector is Apple's color selector. It has a few places to 'mix' colors, and a few screens of preset colors. If you click on a Black colored box, the selector opens, if you click the 'crayons' on far right you see a field of colored pencils with Licorice sticking up higher and 'Licorice' above the pencils.
If you click the middle selection (color palettes), there are 4 selections of preset colors and if your color falls into any of them, it will be highlighted in grey.
For working with Lines, check out this, if you haven't already. Makes it pretty simple.

Hi –

Thanks for the reply. Regarding colour, what I'm asking for is something else. If I am building a website and I am using lots of different blues for instance and some of the blues are very similar to each other, if I then click a box which is blue but I can't remember which particular blue it is from my colour palette, it would be good for EW to highlight the blue in use from the set of blues I've created in the colour palette window. By this I mean the grid of squares underneath the coloured crayons / spectrum of colours where you are able to store your own colour palettes.

This has happened to me several times when I'm using different shades of grey for text, hover states of text and clicked links etc. Hopefully this makes sense now?

That does make sense, I forget that field is down there. In addition to that it would be great to right-click the box in inspector and copy that color to another box

The color palette is system wide. I don't think an application has access to it to make changes.

The solution is to create you own your palette :
