Viewing Number of Images Per Page in Image Gallery

Number of Images Per Page in Image Gallery

User: Dan Y. 8 years ago
Is there any way to have more than 50 images per page? My existing iWeb pages have up to 200. (I am conscious of performance.)

The Image Gallery widget - like the Navigation - is built into the app rather than being standalone so only the developers can access the code to change items like the max number of images.

Six to twelve images are enough for any slider with a maximum of twenty four. If you really must have more, why not just add another widget or, better still, continue on another page?

I've only spent a few minutes with Everweb, since displaying photos is my main use case and I was immediately stymied. I want a way to display a couple hundred photos, one at a time. In iWeb, a set of photos is an album, clicking on which expands to a page with thumbnails. From that page, one choice is a slideshow, and another choice, which I prefer, is that clicking on any individual thumbnail brings up viewer that shows an individual photo, with "next" and "previous" buttons. I want the user to be able to click through 200 photos, one at a time, without interruption like going to a different page.

By the way, the iWeb mechanism that has two different interfaces for viewing is not something I particularly like either. i.e. I'm not wedded to the details.

By the way, I am still getting an error message when I post. The last one was this:

"You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'AND threadid = 4062 LIMIT 1' at line 1SELECT followid FROM whmcsbb_follow WHERE userid = AND threadid = 4062 LIMIT 1"

The EverWeb answer to the iWeb albums is to create a page with image links to other pages - each with an image gallery associated with a particular link.

There is a widget for opening a lightbox slider from a single thumbnail. This allows two or more lightbox style sliders per page.

The forum was updated recently and the posting error has been with us since then - hence all the double and triple posts!

The lightbox slider link goes to a page about a "Swipe Gallery with Captions" widget. Is there a limit on number of images? Can the image captions be more than one line? Can the disappearing controls and caption be defeated, or at least the caption remain when the controls disappear? What does "the slideshow is responsive" mean: that it resizes automatically with browser window size? What I'm primarily after is just a way to click through an unlimited number of images one at a time, with captions that might be more than one line, with clear controls that don't disappear.

P.S. I didn't get an SQL error when I posted. :-)

Here's an example of the EverWeb default slider with an info window which has a title and description. The description uses HTML line breaks to go to more than one line.

It can be created without the thumbnail images by checking a box.

@Roddy: Thanks for your help. I'm probably going to give up for now. iWeb works in Yosemite, and reportedly works in El Capitan.

The "slider" widget is close to what I want. But, as far as I can tell, the captions always obscure the photos; I want captions below the photo, centered. Even if I lived with obscured photos, it looks like I'd have to use absolute positioning trial and error on each caption.

I did manage to insert more than 50 photos into the widget, one at a time (laboriously, when you're talking about hundreds). Multiple selection doesn't seem to work in the widget pane. I tried dragging 140 photos from the Assets pane into the slider widget border, with unhappy results. With a small number of images, it seemed to not put the images into the widget, but add them to the page at large. With the larger number, it completely crashed EverWeb, also, on my second try, wiping out the entire page from the project. (Using Everweb 1.9.)

Go to THIS page to see how to load a bunch of images into a slider widget.

I've never tried it with 40 images - far less 140!

I see: drag and drop of image files works, but not in the main window. But it seems to be overwhelmed by more than a handful of images: when I deleted some images from a long list in the slider inspector asset list, in Preview mode it then displayed a bunch of asset-not-found error messages. Quitting and restarting made it regain its senses.

Not being able to display captions except superimposed over the image area is now the showstopper. Interestingly, if the click-to-enlarge option is checked, the popup window is almost the desired behavior: it surrounds the image with a border and places the caption below the image at the bottom. (But a long caption runs off the bottom of the page.)

Here's an example of a slider which has the image title and description below and the directional arrows outside of the frame.
The arrows disappear when the page is viewed on an iPad to be replaced by finger swiping.

The widget has the max number of slides set at 30 but, since it is one of my widgets, I can change this.

This is an Info Slider I was developing for some reason or another and forgot all about it.

@Roddy: Well, I did some web searching, and came across something called PhotoSwipe. And then found an old EverWeb forum thread where you interacted with someone about it. And also some comments about iWeb usage.

First, for my particular usage (probably unusual), there is no value in search engine optimization. In fact, I would prefer my personal websites to be invisible to search engines. I understand iWeb is inadvertently helpful in that regard, in that it’s not inherently search-friendly.

The example on the PhotoSwipe home page looks excellent. I like the controls that enable zoom and full screen, the control icons themselves, and their placement. It looks like a caption can be three lines, and it is centered, in a nice font size. The controls and caption are placed exactly to my liking, including an image counter at a corner, outside the image. The black background. If I could have a display exactly like that, just invoked from a static thumbnail image link, I would be a happy camper.

The PhotoSwipe descriptions of performance features, e.g. lazy loading, seem very desirable for my usage of a couple hundred images. (By the way, some commenter on an EverWeb review I came across previously explained that he maintained something like a dozen iWeb sites where 300 images at a time were displayed, and that kept him from considering EverWeb. So I’m not alone there.)

However, I gather PhotoSwipe is not jQuery and that’s an issue. And it requires predefining image sizes, and that’s definitely a usability issue for me. The author suggests “Magnific Popup” as a jQuery-compatible alternative that doesn’t require predefining image sizes. The example for that tool looks nice, although it lacks the more elaborate controls, and I’m not sure about the caption length.

But I’m not that eager for a new hobby of java script development and would like a drag-and-drop configuration interface. I take it that PhotoSwipe somehow led to your “Swipe Gallery with Captions” widget. Any comments in view of the above?

P.S. Interesting: The forum system autocorrects and won't let me write "java script" as one capitalized word.
