Question on screen size and resolution for new purchase.

User: dan y 10 years ago
I've been using an old black Macbook with a screen resolution of 1280 X 800. UG! I'm replacing the Macbook for an IMac and need some input on screen resolution. Is 1920 X1080 enough,, or,, in this higher resolution evolving world would it make sense to step up to 2560 X 1440? The latter is a pretty big monitor and perhaps overkill but I'm tired of shuffling the screen images around to see everything and will probably keep whatever I purchase for a few years.

Any thoughts?

You are really just talking about screen real estate here. The bigger the screen size (diagonal measurement) the more room you have to work.

I use both a 24 inch iMac and Macbook Pro Retina. The quality of the "viewing experience" is undoubtably far superior on the MacBook but it's not the best tool for creating websites.

Like a few million others, I am waiting for Apple to produce the promised skinny version of the Thunderbolt display to attach to the MacBook. If they don't hurry up I'm just going to stick an SSD in my iMac which is my weapon of choice for doing almost anything. The Macbook is just for posing on planes and in public so that people think I actually know something about computers.

If web design is your thing, go for the biggest screen size. The 27 inch screen is a delight to work on but I would say that the 21.5 is better in some ways than my 24 due to the better aspect ratio.

I decided to purchase only a monitor (a $$ thing)

Got a 23.5" LG with 1920 x 1080 for $199.00 at Best Buy. It works fine. A larger screen would have been overkill. The Easyweb screen is really wide when making a website at 950 pixels. Now I can see everything including putting the text, color and an image size app on the screen.

Using my old Macbook and moving things around was a real chore. Not any more.
