Viewing Image Gallery glitches

Image Gallery glitches

User: sharlenawood 8 years ago
I have noticed a few things using the image gallery (as my website is primarily to showcase my art) ...

1. the names of my assets are not aligned properly (at least via preview) even though I have made that setting. ie. they are aligned to be centre, but some are justifying left.

2. slow and glitchy movements that take 30 sec each (yes, all my images are appropriately sized). I do understand that these gallery pages are more complicated/larger file sizes, but I can barely add text or move the image gallery window without huge delays :( now that I am near finished, this is extra frustrating as my patience has already been exercised. I am constantly saving, closing and re-opening the program - which helps.... but it's not efficient.

3. have not seen an update since previous issue of re-arranging/deleting images in the gallery, defaulting to deleting or moving the whole gallery widget (and not the selected image). just following up....

perhaps the preview does not show things perfectly?

ps. I've gone through all the video tutorials for seo and they are great! thank you for all the info and direction. it would be so cool if there was a paypal option for image gallery assets (individually) or if a menu navigation could link to a different website (ie my 'shop' could directly link and open to storenvy, which I opened because it was easier than creating a store page as per your suggestions, but it would be fabulous if the menu took people straight there). just some passing thoughts

What is the average image file size and how many images do you have in the gallery??

I resized all images to max 800 pixels, some are less (which actually bothers me as that shows in the slideshow, and I want consistency - eventually :). all images are 72 DPI. I never had any warnings about file size when adding these images to the gallery as assets. If I am wrong, please let me know how to correct this ... I did it the best way I knew how.

72 DPI means nothing in web design. You need to find the image size in Kb.

Go to an image file in the Finder and control (right) click it to "Get Info". The popup window will show you the file size. An 800px wide image should be no more than 150Kb. Also make sure you are using JPEGs - not PNG or TIFF.

Remember that the number of images in the gallery will also have an effect on page download speed. I recommend no more then 24 for a full site and 12 for a mobile one.

Hi Roddy, I wish I could send a screenshot ... most images are approx 150kb but some are up to 450 ... if that is the problem, my question is : can I continue on and deal with the slow glitches, as I truly cannot accept resizing and uploading everything again. I wish I had known that before I started. Fact is, my website is an art gallery, so if I can't have more than 24 images, I will have to re-do my site with someone else anyway.

perhaps that warning for large images should be set for anything over the 150 kb recommendation. if that was the case, I would have 'been warned' about it, rather than being allowed to screw myself over.
User: sharlenawood 8 years ago
there are no more than 24 in each gallery ... so it's the file size that is the problem. fantastic to know. sigh.

via photoshop, I cannot have some of my images at 150 kb without them being low resolution (via the web & devices option). some images have a lot of colour, which = higher file size.

Would it be possible/doable to break your paintings by type or subject or medium? Each on a separate page with a slideshow?
This is NOT recommended by EW but is what I do. I got an app in mac store called Compress. It is small and simple. It will compress an image and ramp up the quality at the same time and both are adjustable.
The difference between 150kb and 450kb can be quite a lot. At the most basic it is 3x the amount of data to download and load.

Thanks for your suggestion - can I still ask, if I can deal with this for now, is it acceptable?

All galleries are split up into subject/medium already. I've spent so long getting this together, I must publish asap ... I can eventually re-size everything (I have been using K-Studio ReSize, but I'll try Compress) but it will take AGES especially with the current issues of deleting/rearranging images in this widget.

I am sorry I did not notice this before- perhaps the preview does not show things perfectly?
My experience is that Preview does not preview everything correctly.

I just put some images into Image Gallery and Previewed it and it worked correctly for me. All the images were small file size but different aspect ratios.

I hate to say this but need to say it. For me, I have found that the more I mess with a widget, there comes a point when it just does not behave properly. Not just EW widgets but widgets everywhere.
It took me a few months to get to grips with images and sizes and what I felt was a good look. Most others go through the same thing. I have a domain that I use for testing. My habit now is to design/test on the test site and when it works as I want it to, I can then quickly go into another project and whip it together pretty fast.
Have you tried resizing using Preview in computer rather than Photoshop? You may get satisfactory results. I use Preview to resize my images. I will take an image that is 2.2mb and 3400px wide, resize it to 1200px wide and it will be about 300kb. I then use Compress to drop it to 80-110kb size in general.
As far as the image size warning goes, it needs to be as high a file size as possible for all uses of images for all users. It cuts off at a size that can be handled but are a larger size than most experienced people would use.

Thank you for your time and sharing your experience. I hope you can understand when I say iWeb was much more user friendly, and I could 'tinker' all I liked (I am not a perfectionist! but creativity is a process!). It's baffling to me that I am am potentially fussing too much and essentially, 'breaking' the program. I have always done my own websites ...

sorry about my short reply ... the last two 'kinder, gentler' write ups were deleted as I was logged out. this is our lives!!!!!!

I just published www.sharlenawood.com and www.cjmccabe.com ... I know I have to reduce file sizes now. thanks for all your suggestions re that.... its going to be a beast! :P
User: James G. 8 years ago
It is a beast but from then on out it is second nature and you can also batch resize to make it quicker.
The sites are beautiful and so are the works. Everything worked fine for me, the galleries hung for about a second before opening. I think the sideways tree in the slideshow looks great and fits the look.
I never used iweb and can say I like EW because it makes me learn a little and makes me want to learn more.
Hopefully you will get used to the forum logout, I copy before hitting Post
