Viewing Lower case pages names

Lower case pages names

User: Mike C. 8 years ago
I am evaluating the trial software for EverWeb. I need to maintain and expand my existing iWeb site as iWeb now crashes when I try and publish any changes.
The copy and past appears to work well but these is an inconsistency with image sizes when I specify a new image.

However, the major problem for me seems to be that the web page names are converted to all lower case. Despite what I name them any internal link to the page shows up with a lower case name. As publishing does not work on the trial version I am not sure if this carries through to the published site? It does in the preview option.

I need to maintain the case specific page names of my original site because the links to them are in many people's bookmark folder and the URLs have been published in numerous videos and paper books and handouts.

Can this "feature" be disabled in the full version?

iWeb created links with non standard characters that would cause issues for users. We only publish files with alphanumeric characters in lowercase.

However, we have a built in feature for redirecting old iWeb pages to EverWeb pages. It requires the EverWeb + Hosting account.

See if this helps :

Make URL case insensitive on Apache server using PHP

Thanks for the quick response.

Sorry but this is a deal breaker, I get "free" web hosting as part of my ISP package and the front part of the URL is locked to that anyway so I have to host where I am. I shall have to look elsewhere for my solution.

Also:-

It says:-

That is unless you have root access to your server

Which I don't. Again thanks.

@Mike: It will be difficult to find a tool that will create links/file names like iWeb because of all the non alphanumerical characters in there.

I hope you do find what you are looking for and please report back if you find something that meets your needs.

Can I ask you if the $100/year for EverWeb + Hosting is too much for you or is it just the idea of paying for something you already get for free?

I'd be very interested in your feedback.

Thanks and if you have any other questions, I'm here to help!

My feed back is I think you have made the product deliberately flawed so that you can sell me stuff I do not need. I would like you to send me $100 a year for nothing.

What do you mean by an inconsistency with image sizes when I specify a new image ?

As far as using mixed characters in a URL, Apple likes to do things that nobody else does. They really screw things up for everyone else. Apple does things incorrectly, EW does things correctly. Instead of getting angry at EW for not providing a way to do things in an incorrect manner; why not email Apple and ask why they led you down a path that is the opposite of web standards? I know from many times of experience that if you were to post it in Apple forums, it would be deleted before it got posted, you may get a quarter-assed answer through email before being cut-off and told to take it up with their legal department

Woah Mike, I'm sorry I've left such a negative impression on you.

A quick Google search turns up a ton of resources on why you shouldn't use uppercase letters in your file names. For you, or anyone else that is interested to learn more about it. EverWeb is not "flawed" in the way it does things, it is actually an improvement over iWeb.

Well the hosting platform we provide offers ease of use which has a lot of value I believe.

What we do to redirect your old iWeb site to your new EverWeb site can be done with any web hosting provider. You just need to do 301 redirects. So if you don't think we're providing enough value, you are welcome to implement it on your own hosting account.

Again, I am sorry I left such a negative impression on you.

I am here to help though if you still need it.

With the advent of 3.0 are you still sticking to the no uppercase in URLs self imposed rule?

We have already implemented the code to generate pages with capital letters, we need to do more testing but may enable this option in version 3.1.

Hey just found this old thread as I am trying to solve the same problem as the other user. Was the code to generate pages with capital letters ever implemented? I am using 3.8 and I cannot find it. I have a number of old smaller pages I am rebuilding that are referenced with all CAPS and Id rather not have to build and host redirects from the old pages if possible.

Mike

PS I totally agree on the web standards thing but life takes some weird turns...
