Viewing Submenus

I just added a directory to create a submenu by adding a page to it. When I open the submenu, it looks like this: Did I miss something, or are features to change the look ... behavior of the submenu in the making? And why is the background on the menu changing when I hover over it? I've not set any background nor action on mouseover? Sorry for asking stupid questions.
