Blocking certain countries?

User: Darren R. 11 years ago
Hi,I am on a learning curve with my website and would really appreciate any advice on blocking certain countries from accessing it. I get lots of hits from Russia and also lots of spam. Would blocking Russia help remedy this do you think? If so would anyone have any advice on how to do this? I've googled and read various methods but am a little unsure as to how to do this with everweb.

Many thanks in advance for any help offered.

Blocking is done on the server - usually via the .htaccess file - so it doesn't involve EverWeb.

If you publish to the EverWeb sever you would need to contact support to see if/how this can be done.

If you publish to another server, you can open a free account with blockacountry.com and take it from there. This involves uploading a .htaccess file to your server or adding the info to the existing one. In this case you would need to contact your host's tech support if you are not sure how to do this.

This type of blocking is only worth considering if you use Adsense and/or the extra traffic is causing bandwidth limits to be exceeded.

If your main problem is email spam, blocking access to the site is not really the answer.

First, you should remove any email address links from your site so that the spammer's only option is to use the contact form.

If you are using a web mail address on the server - such as info@mywebsite.com - set it up as a redirect to a Gmail address and then add this account to Mail on your Mac.

Web mail on the server in general does not have effective spam blocking. Diverting the traffic through Gmail and Mail will reduce spam to a manageable amount.

Using Captcha on your form(s) should only be considered as a last resort since this is more likely to deter genuine visitors from getting touch.

Thanks once again Roddy, that all makes good sense. I'll go and try it.. I think maybe it's the email link then. Excuse my lack of knowledge on this.

Removing any email links will help a lot but the change won't be instant because the search engines will have cached these pages.

Update and resubmit the sitemap.xml to the search engines as soon as possible after making the changes.
