Overlapping objects in 1.8b9

User: wellnl 9 years ago
Hi Paul

Thanks for a great update in 1.8!

I've set up a master page with buttons for social media etc. The buttons are fixed on scroll (not grouped). The Master template is applied to pages and works fine except under the following condition. I've added a rectangle shape (as a background) and made it full width. The shape is sent to back so that the buttons should slide over on top of the shape and it looks fine on the Editor in EW. This works fine except if my shape is positioned under the button(s) to start with. Then the buttons go underneath the shape and not on top. See the attached screenshots. I've reduced the height of the white background rectangle shape so in one screen short so you can see how it works...

I'll message you the links to the site...

Thanks!

Is the shape inserted into the master page - or not?
Are the buttons insert as a unit or individually?

Hi

No the buttons are individual, not grouped. They are in the master page.
The shape is on the page itself.
If the buttons are on the page too, then yep, works fine! It's only when on the master page...

I would class this as a bug - more of a How do I..?

z-index is a number which represents the front to back stacking order of the items on a page. EverWeb assigns a z-index to every item inserted with the first item having the lowest value and the last the highest.
When you add items to a master page, these items are added to child pages first. Therefore they will have a lower z-index than items added to the child page itself and will need to be brought to the front on every page.

You can make life easier for yourself and increase the efficiency of the page HTML doc by creating your social media links like this...

http://everwebcodebox.com/links/social-media.html

... or use a widget like THIS or THIS.

Then you only have one item to bring to the font.

When I use a master page, I only insert the header and footer content. For any other pages which have the same items in the content area I create a template page with these objects on it. The template page uses the the info from the master page to create the header and footer. Any time I need a new page I duplicate the template page.

The template page can include basic stuff like h2 through h4 HTML headings, a default paragraph, media place holder etc.

Hi Roddy

Thanks for the input. Yes I appreciate the way in which EW uses the z-index to stack the objects. And yes I can work around it... but from a user perspective what I see when stacking objects on my web page in EW is different to what I see when I publish that page. Using send to back/bring forwards does not sort the order of stacking in this case however much you try so it does not work as expected. I could do coding stuff, but IMHO that's not the right answer in this case as EW is billed primarily as a tool that requires no coding... as in 'EverWeb is a drag and drop website builder, which means no code is required at all' as per the EW website!

I wasn't aware that I was suggesting that EverWeb users should have to use code.

Perhaps the video/instructions should be updated to show users what should NOT be included master pages?

No worries Roddy, just being Devil's Advocate and trying to see the problem from the angle EW users who don't want to think about learning/using code :) Your insights are always appreciated

In EW 1.8b10 there is now an option to Arrange> Always on top and this provides the ability to float objects above everything else! Perfect, thanks Paul
