Viewing You tube videos, responsive pages, etc

You tube videos, responsive pages, etc

User: Carlos C. 9 years ago
Hi, I wonder if the widget for you tube plays the videos by remote hosting at the youtube website, so that the bandwidth used is actually at the youtube server and not at my server?

Also, I've read how to do the navigation menu at the heather of the page, but if I also need to have a menu on the left side of the page with submenus, something that is often used for product categories or subject categories, can I do that? And in that case what would be the procedure?

Reading all the talk about the ways to do responsive websites, I'd like to suggest that when there is a controversy as such, rather than staying on one side of the fence, why not give people the options of 2 ways of doing things and they can choose the way that they prefer.

Lets not forget about the issue of big screens, Steve Jobs was adamant that big screens were not the way to go even that the market was asking for that and that bit of arrogance like "we don't ask users what they like, what tell them what they need".

Well, we all know how that one ended, after 3 years of delays and a tremendous loss of business to competitors, Apple finally got into into big screens and that's what most people are buying.

When in doubt, give users the options.

Just my 2 cents. By the way, the way Landscape implemented the responsive design looks fantastic !!!!

I would like to comment on Landscape, even though it is being discussed in another thread. EW is working on fluid/responsive design.
If you pay attention to what is said in Landscape video and what is written, you find that the word hide is used. This means that it would not work for a great many people very well. You build 1 site and choose what to hide from the user on the other 2 sites. What that means to me is that my desktop site has videos and image galleries and may be 80mb in size; my mobile site may be 2mb in size (due to not including videos and galleries). Why would I want my users to download 80mb of data to a device when they are only going to get to see 2mb? How long will 80mb of data take to download to a phone? Do my users have more than 20mb cache?
Yes a great number of people want responsive design, but do not really know what it is, or what it entails to achieve.

Yes, you are right, good point.

The YouTube video is streamed from their server.

Is this flyout the type of menu you require?

If you read my post in THIS topic you will find out that Landscape does not produce a responsive design.

If you look at the examples I have linked to, you will find out what a responsive design is, what you need to do to achieve it and why it isn't the best solution in most cases.

Hi Roddy, Thank you for the answers; yes, that flyout menu is what I was talking about, always in addition to the standard menu in the header. Please let me know when you have the widget available, any timetable for that?

Yes, I'm already getting the idea now about the responsive method used by Landscape, thank you, good points, my suggestion anyway, was to give users the extra option that other developers are implementing so that users can also get it within Everweb even if that's not the correct solution, but just for the sake of people having the option. My concern is that when people check out this software, they will find it inadequate and move on.

The method used by "Landscape" just allows the lazy designer to create three different fixed width layouts using the same elements. Creating three different sites is a much better option.

On the full site you can use hovers, text hyperlinks etc. On the iPad/iPhone site you need to change these to buttons or increase the vertical padding on the text hyperlink. The navigation needs three different styles as show in this demo. Navigation for the full site can be traditional with hovers. For tablets, the navigation blocks need to be increased to fingertip sized tabs with no hovers and the smart phone version can be a full width vertical design.

Mobile designs need CTA buttons instead of text hyperlinks, smaller, faster loading sliders with swipe or tap navigation. Video file sizes need to be reduced and audio players reduced to a simple button and so on...

The tablet version can use the same content and media files as the full site but the smart phone needs smaller ones and a lot less content. One of the requirements for designing mobile sites is knowing what to leave out.

The widget for creating the flyout navigation won't be available for a while as I still have to add some more widgets to the pack..

You can find instructions for creating this type of menu here...
