Navigation Bar not publishing changes

User: Lizabeth S. 11 years ago
Using drop down menus, changed File Name, Nav Menu Display Name, and Web Page Title. After publishing changes do NOT happen, nav menu still directs to old page.

This is especially frustrating as I deleted (in EW) the old page but EW publishes it anyway. It took me a long time to realize that, when I made changes on the new page and they didn't show up, it was because the link was sending me to an old page that I thought was deleted. By hacking the url I was able to view the published new page and indeed the changes had been made there.

Am now trying Publish Entire Site to see if that fixes the nav bar issues, will let you know in a half hour or so (my site has lots of media and takes forever to publish.)

OK publishing entire site did not fix the problem.

Most likely you haven't published properly. What is your website URL so I can take a look?

Paul: Tried to start a ticket from your website but it choked on the attachments, whats going on is that the directory is not updating the URL, changes are being made on the proper page but the site still links to a page that no longer exists in EW (although EW continues to publish that page anyway.

I'm having a similar problem. I've made significant changes to my site, hit publish, but the website still looks the same.

Before previewing newly published files on the server, make sure you have cleared your browser cache.

If you can't be bothered to do this - or don't know how - hit the refresh button a few times or place a ? at the end of the URL so that the browser is forced to load the newly published files rather than the old ones in the cache.

Liz: Use the publish entire site option under the file menu.

Thanks but this happened after clearing cache and after publishing entire site. It also happened by looking at it from a different account, with a different browser after having rebooted computer.

And now for the really odd thing. Went to bed that night after the changes failed to appear and the next afternoon looked at the site, without having ever relaunched EW, and the changes were there.

Is it somehow possible that EW can report publishing successful but publishing is actually still ongoing in the background? This one really has me stumped.

Since this happened I have successfully published a small change (although I still find that when I make a small change inside a text box EW will not recognize that a change has been made until I cut and repaste the text box.)

Also EW is still publishing deleted pages, is that a bug or a feature?

It's not possible that this would happen unless you have the wrong directory path. This is most likely happening because your hosting company, cloudflare, will cache your pages on THEIR end. So you need to check with them to either turn this off or improve it. It is NOT an issue with EverWeb or anything we can fix. The ONLY way we can fix it is if you switch to our hosting platform, otherwise this is a server issue and since I don't know how it works on their end, I can't provide any reasoning for when you will see updates.

You'll notice that cloudfare has this feature "Automatic static content caching". That is most likely what is causing this issue for you.

If you are paying for the above services from cloudfare, they are not needed for your type of website and you can save a lot of money and prevent these issues by switching to a regular web hosting provider.

The change will be recognized once you click outside the textbox. You'll see the file name goes bold in the web page list once you click out of editing a text object.

I answered this question in your other forum post as well as the post right above your last one.. Use the Publish Entire Site option under the File menu to delete old unused pages from your website.

Paul: re: deleted pages reappearing on server.

I will check with the owner of the server we publish to but this really isn't making sense to me as I delete the pages with Fetch, close Fetch, open Fetch back up a few hours later and the pages are still deleted and as soon as I publish from EW the deleted pages reappear. Do you want me to open a ticket so that I can email you screen caps of the server file structure before and after publishing and email cap of the EW app file structure? (Our host is free btw)

This is exactly what does not happen, I can probably do screen caps to show you that as well. Small changes in a text box are not recognized even if I go to another page in EW. To get EW to recognize them I have to cut and paste the changed text box. This issue is sporadic.

A screen recording of the second issue with text boxes would be better. To do this open quicktime in your applications folder and go to file menu then record screen. Use dropbox or another file sharing tool to send the video to us. It will be on the desktop. Make sure to reference this conversion In the ticket send in.

Once I figure that out we'll work on the publishing issue.

Thanks Paul will try and do that. No luck, or luck, can't reproduce right now. As I said sporadic, usually when it happens it will happen repeatedly, next time it happens I will try and do the screen recording again.

Editing this post a minute after the above statement.
So I had added one word to a text box and it made the page go bold with a red dot, and I then went to Safari to post the above. When I went back to EW and hit preview it all pages showed red and it is now republishing the entire site, including tons of graphics. I have a screen cap of this if you want.

Edit a few minutes later. OK, it looked at the entire site but it did not actually republish the whole site, which is good.

And I swear I am not insane BUT, this time it finally also did not republish deleted pages. So, right now, all is working as it should (except maybe it was odd that all pages turned red when one word was added on one page.) Screen cap of that below, perhaps its normal behavior?

OK, link to screen shot
