Image Quality Issues

once you get your images sorted out, how do you want to show them?

This is the question everyone should ask before attempting to create a website to display quality images. Do you want to show 30 images which visitors will just flip quickly through or do you want to show just a few higher quality ones?

The EverWeb slider and gallery are designed as a one size fits all for those who just want to drag and drop some images. In that respect they do an excellent job. Anyone who is concerned about showing there work in the best light needs to put a little more thought and effort into how they are going to go about it.

Most of the Lightbox style of slider/galleries have some means of controlling the max size of the images. Since the buzz word these days is "responsive", a popular method is to limit the size based on a percentage of the viewport. For showcasing a number of images with roughly the same width, and controlling the quality, I would be more inclined to use a max width setting using pixels - rather than a percentage.

I recently created a widget for an EverWeb user who wanted to display a few images in a Lightbox slider which opened from a text link. The idea being that several products could be displayed on one page - hence the text rather than image links. The light box was to launch with a zero background opacity so that the images "floated" above the page content. This type of thing is very common on commercial websites where the designer wants a larger , better quality image but doesn't want to detach the visitor from the page content

I ended up using Colorbox for this since it is does the job a lot more efficiently than its competitors with the minimum of code. The width incorporates a setting for maximum width so that images with larger file sizes can be forced into a smaller container to increase the quality. That way, the user can have control over the quality of the individual images - not just the gallery as a whole.

In the past year I have created a lot of widgets for showcasing images via sliders, galleries, carousel and so on. It doesn't matter how much - or how little - I include in a particular widget, somebody always wants more or something slightly different. This week is quite typical in that I have designed one gallery widget from scratch and modified two others to suit individual requirements.

As Christopher has pointed out, if you want to show your images in the best possible way, you need to explore the options and be very specific about what you want. He is a good example of an EverWeb user who decided what he wanted and put a lot of time and effort into finding and implementing his method of choice. Take a look through all the forum posts about PhotoSwipe and you will get an idea of how much effort he applied to find a solution!
