Viewing Image Gallery for Mobile

Image Gallery for Mobile

User: Christopher 9 years ago
At present, EW does not offer a good image gallery for mobile. It's taking me days trying to implement something decent that will look good and work. Out of frustration, I gave the Image Gallery widget another go. Look what it does on my iPhone (see pic below). Maybe this is a bug. Maybe it's something I did wrong. But regardless, the tiling of the thumbs on the main page looks horrendous. If I don't want captions, I get a huge space dividing my rows. There's no way to just create a simple grid with 10px top/bottom, 10px left/right.

The html snippet is 420px wide, same as page. This is the result on my iPhone 5.

So then I tried the Slider. Works fine if you don't want thumbs. But the thumbs are poorly compressed and always cropped. I can't make the bg translucent. Matching colour to my page bg still appears darker. And the controls are too small for a phone.

When is EW going to provide a useful image gallery for Mobile??? I'm spending days trying to get something else to work. Shadowbox's controls are too small. Photoswipe screws up during phone rotation. Its new version might be the key to my happiness... after hours/days of grief trying to implement it!

Both the gallery and the slider generate the thumbs from the full size image. If you want better thumbs you need to crop them out yourself and use code to create the gallery/slider.

I tend not to use sliders with thumbs in general and never on a site that is going to be viewed on a smart phone. In the past I have used Galleria to create a slider with thumbnail carousel but I always made the thumbs and controls disappear on smaller screens to be replaced by swiping.

Smart phone sliders should contain about 6-12 images - cropped to the same aspect ration - with captions and finger swiping. The captions are more or less essential because the visitor can't see any accompanying text when viewing the images. A few well chosen images with descriptive captions will get your message across far better on smart phones than a bunch of thumbs which reduce the viewable area of the full size images.

There are lots of variations of swipe sliders - with or without captions. If you want to display images with different aspects ratios the Adaptive Slider has vanishing controls, swipe, captions and a slideshow description - all in the same element for maximum SEO value.

Pager dots replace thumbs for mobile use to let the visitor know where they are and how many images are in the slider.

EverWeb's Image Gallery still doesn't work for me on an iPhone. I changed the metrics to 400px wide (10px on each side). Looks the same as in the picture above. I don't know what else the issue could be.

Okay thanks. I saw the link. Obviously EW eventually needs to implement the changes internally.

The Lazy Loading Swipe Mobile Slider widget was created for use on the mobile version of the site.

Pages that are downloaded over wireless cell phone networks should have the image size kept to a minimum and the number kept as low as possible. Ideally, they shouldn't have more than on slider.

If you really need to have more than one slideshow per mobile page, you should use a widget like the Lazy Load Slider. Go to THIS page and click the envelope icon in the toolbar at the bottom of the hero image to contact me.
