Hyperlinking problems in v 7.1.2

User: Christopher 9 years ago
I've been trying to enable png icons as hyperlink on a master page. Everything looks perfect. EW shows me the forward arrow. But when published, the links don't work. Icons that I've hyperlinked previous to this update DO work.

Here's my site. It's the pen and mail icon at the top. (Mobile site)

Check for update, 1.7.3 now, forgot what is in it, may work better

The nav button (including the menu items that pop up) on the left is covering the icons.

Select the pen and mail icon and do :

Command-Shift-F

to move them to the front.

Nothing should be covering/overlapping anything. I'll bring to front though and if that works, thanks.

Hey Jumbo, since I can't PM you, can you weigh in on this thread please.

Try this quick test: Drag the Menu Icon below the line it is above. Does the functionality of those 2 buttons come back? Like jumbo said, it appears to be maybe "invisible" overlap of sorts.

Your navigation bar is covering those icons. In Safari if you have the Developer menu enabled (preferences->advanced->Enable Developer menu) you can right click on those objects and select 'Inspect' You'll see its covering them.

In EverWeb it may not look like it is but still the width goes beyond the HTML Snippet object.

Okay thanks for the Inspector tip. How do I fix this? The pop out content is 320 wide. Or at least I thought it was. It's 313px. Huh? Still...

Magic word : z-index.

Have a look at this page : http://m.cleetche.com/tribe-of-joseph

The backbutton works.

If you know what you did, you can do the same for the buttons that are covered.

Jumbo T is partially correct in saying...

In this particular design, the nav button is in the same div as the drop down o'clock menu. When the code is pasted into EverWeb, the actual space occupied by the button is roughly equal to is height plus the total width of the navigation. Anything dynamic placed in this dead area will would need to be brought to the front after the navigation widget. This problem does not arise when using the same code to create a page in using an editor.

The dead area does not extend over the area occupied by the drop down so any hyperlinks placed in that area will work OK regardless of its z-index.

When I created the Codebox website I assumed that those who attempted the projects would either have a basic knowledge of code or would take the time read the section about inserting it. Its fairly obvious from a lot of the emails I get that most people don't bother to read these pages and, as a result, make rookie mistakes.

On the other hand, I assume that those who purchase the widgets have little or no knowledge of code and try to provide more comprehensive instructions. I recently had an email from a user who had a similar problem with one of the navigation widgets. As a result, I updated the information about them. Those who purchase the widgets, and actually read the pages about inserting the Icon Nav or the Icon M Nav, are directed to a page with info about stacking order in general and and about these widgets in particular.

The widget for creating the 2 level version is different in that the code for the button is separate from the click drop nav.

I did. The z-index numbers are stacked correctly there with the back button at '41' and the clickNav button at '40'.

No matter how many times I try, and no matter how many different attempts, I can't seem to fix the issue with the pen and mail icons. The difference is that those two icons are on a master page. That's the only difference. I assume if I just copy n paste onto each page, and bring to front, they'll be functional again. But must I do that? Is this something that could be corrected in a next version of EW?

EDIT: You know what, the stacking order simply doesn't hold on a Master page. I 'bring to front', visit another page, go back, and it requires the same process all over again.

Here's the thing. If EverWeb were to license or include your widgets, I'd use them. I'd use them because they're there. But when I go onto your everwebcodebox site, I find nice and easy instructions on how to implement them myself. And in so doing, I actually learn something in the process. It might take me hours or even days... but there's a sense of satisfaction in actually getting everything to work and feeling like I've done it myself. Maybe you should consider adding a Donate button or Tip jar to your site. Then people like me could give a little back! I'd be happy to do so because you definitely deserve it :)

If you read the stuff I put on THIS page you will discover how z-index is assigned in EverWeb.

When you create a page from a master page, any objects added to it will have a higher z-index than the ones that came from the master page. Therefore, an item like the navigation will need to be brought to the from ton every child page and - in your case - the overlapping icon links.

z-index is slightly more complicated than the way I described it on the page linked to above. With EverWeb we need to consider each item we place on a page as a child element since the application encloses everything in two divs - one of which has the z-index applied when it is added to the page. These divs are necessary to allow the user to drag the items around the page.

When using code entry, it would be possible to give the items like the navigation widget a very high z-index at the outset. With EverWeb, the value of the z-index for the navigation could be 10000 but its z-index - or stacking order - in relation to the other objects on the page is that of the parent div.

The answer would be to have a box in the Metrics inspector where we could select an item and assign a z-index to it manually. Even if this was available, I wonder how many users would take the time to find out what it did and how to use it?

Between the Widgetbox and the HTML5 widgets sites there are over 200 widgets. It would be kind of unrealistic for EverWeb to include all these. I have lost count of the number of widgets that I have tailored to suit users' specific requirements and to date, I have never charged for my time in doing this - even when payment has been offered.

I created the Codebox website to illustrate the power of EverWeb's method of code injection. Most of the info dates back to the time when I first starting testing the app to see what it could do. Due to lack of time, I haven't added too much to it lately. Although I do try to answer my fair share of questions in this forum, I spend a lot more time helping those who contact me directly - especially those who want to make their websites more unique by using custom code. I don't expect any return for this - or the projects on the Codebox site - as I want to encourage those who are willing to go the extra mile and go out of the box. Hopeful, by doing this, I will offset some of the negative karma created during my years of "irresponsible" behavior while engaged in the music business!

Anybody who feels they want to give back can do so by contributing to this forum and helping those who are willing to try something other than drag and drop.
