Re-Named page

If you double click a page to re-name it, it does not update the page name in the page inspector

I think its more logical to enter the page name in the Page inspector where all the other page info is.

It took me a while to get out of the iWeb way of doing it. But then iWeb didn't have all these other facilities in the Page inspector and it was always a pain to have to click twice to get tp the page dimensions etc.

I knew this was a bad idea and here's why.

I was doing a page that illustrates how to create standard and smooth scrolling anchors. To illustrate that an anchor doesn't just have to go to a point in the same page - but can go to any point on any page - I picked one that was fairly long so that I could target the bottom to show how it worked differently from a standard link which goes to the page top. The page I picked was named "Wow Slider" in the left column of EW.

In iWeb I would never have named the page like this for obvious reasons. Rather, I would have named it "wow-slider". Its kind of strange that some testers want some things exactly as they were in iWeb but others different - and confusing as you will see.

To create the anchor I needed to enter the "page-name.html#targetID" in the HTML. But, being a beginner, how do I know that the page file name is "page-name.html" and not "Page Name.html"?

In the page inspector, EasyWeb is telling me that the "File Name" is "Page Name". I enter "Page Name.html" into the code and my anchor doesn't work.

If some users feel they really need to see a fictitious name in the left column - rather than the real file name - then you really need to add yet another box in the page inspector for this non-existent "Page Name" and have the real file name appear in the "FIle Name" box.

Also, you would need to explain to users why you are departing from basic web design principles and giving names to elements that don't actually exist!

Roddy,

You bring up a good point.

If we make EasyWeb change spaces to - people will ask why it is doing that. If we don't then you are correct, you won't get the right name.

We'll have to determine the past way to handle this situation.

Its a long, long time since I looked at the iWeb help file but I don't ever recall any instruction about page names. I can only assume the developers thought that people were going to use stuff like "Home", About", "Contact" etc!

The iWeb system was really bad and it was common to load users sites in the browser and see the URLs plastered with %20.

Page file names are a kind of fundamental in web design and you would think that people would take the trouble to learn these basic things before creating their masterpiece. Obviously not!

The instructions probably need some mention of all this along with an explanation of what each one is and does.

From my experience with the instructional ebooks I compiled, I found that most people can create quite complicated projects without support and most of the cries for help involved bad file names or a simple error in the URL - even although they had been advised to test them in the browser before committing the code to the doc.

The iWeb forums are full of the same questions repeated over and over. Most of the answers could have consisted of a reference to the appropriate topic in the index of the instruction manual - if such a thing had existed! Those subjects that were covered in the help file were mostly in vain because it was obvious that a large number of users couldn't be bothered to read them.

I suppose its a sign of the times that people need a video to walk them through a simple task when a few well chosen lines of instructions would serve just as well. I have never actually sat through a whole instructional movie since most of them are long winded and inaccurate.

I wasn't referring to the Rage videos which are of a very high standard.

I'm talking about the 100's of "instructional" videos by iWeb "experts" on YouTube.
