Trouble with FTP Server settings with Other Web Host

User: Joe G. 9 years ago
I bought the Standalone EverWeb and having trouble publishing to a third party host, Host Excellence.

I'm rebuilding my iWeb site that I publish to the same host. I'm basically using the same FTP Settings, with the exception of the site name and since I'm publishing to a Subdirectory, I'm trying to use the EverWeb FTP Server Settings/Subdirectory field.

1) I can't put the full URL path to my Subdirectory in EverWebs Subdirectory field. The Subdirectory name at Host Excellence is test.capecodupholstery.com. I assume I would put that URL into EverWeb Subdirectory field, but it will not take the full URL nor will it take any characters, the dot (.)

Also in iWeb, to get my site to publish via built in FTP, the site name was capecodupholstery.com. In EverWeb, I tried to name my site test.capecodupholstery.com. But the site name reverts to all large cap and again will not take any characters, the dot (.).
The site name becomes TESTCAPECODUPHOLSTERYCOM.

Because of one or both of these issues, the files get published, but to incorrect folders. Nothing will publish to my Subdirectory test.capecodupholstery.com.

Any suggestions appreciated.

For the subdirectory just enter:

test

You don't need the full url.

For the site name, don't worry that it is in all caps, that's just how it's displayed in EverWeb.
It's not recommend to use your url as your site name. Unlike iWeb EverWeb doesn't use your site name and make your urls unnecessarily longer than they have to be.

Thank you for the quick reply, especially on a Sunday. If I use test in the Subdirectory field, in the the Website URL field should I use the full URL to my Subdirectory on the Server, which would be http://test.capecodupholstery.com. And in EverWeb, does the site name have anything to do with how the files are transferred via the built in FTP. There's a reason I ask, but I'll wait to see what your answer is.

I need to clarify something, sorry. I'm trying to publish the EverWeb site to a Subdomain of capecodupholstery, not a Subdirectory. So the Subdomain site is test.capecodupholstery.com. This is the folder I want to publish to and can't seem to get the files there via EverWeb FTP.

Yes don't worry a subdomain is really just a subdirectory so just enter

test

And you should be fine

The site name on EverWeb doesn't work like iWeb. iWeb always used the site name when publishing which many users did not like because it made the urls longer than they had to be. It made it easier to have multiple sites under one domain but in the majority of the cases was more of a drawback.

EverWeb makes it easy to publish directly to the root folder or to a subdirectory (or subdomain) with the sub directly field.

Paul, I'm sorry for all the questions, especially to do with files at HE, but here's what's happening when I use "test" for the subdirectory. Here's a screenshot of my EverWeb FTP Settings. http://snag.gy/teldO.jpg With these settings, my site is being published to http://capecodupholstery.com/test/index.html. I want it to publish to a folder called test.capecodupholstery.com, which is my subdomain folder. Here's a screenshot of my directory at HE. You can see it creates the folder test outside of test.capecodupholstery.com. How do I get to publish to test.capecodupholstery.com

The picture of the EW ftp settings is very clear.

In the directory/path field you put :

test.capecodupholstery.com

In the website URL field you put :

http://test.capecodupholstery.com

And the subdirectory field remains empty

When the pages are published the correct url will be displayed in the alert.

And to make clear.

Characters on the left of the domainname is a sub-domain.
Characters on the right of the domainname is a directory.

And to add to the confusion,

http://capecodupholstery.com
http://www.capecodupholstery.com

are the same by default.

If you want an explicit website for www, you add a subdomain www and most servers will create that directory, just as test.

Then you have two distinct webadresses.

Your a genius, at least to me! Filling in the directory/path and website url path as you suggested works perfectly, thank you.

In the eventuality I publish my EverWeb site directly to my root directory, capecodupholstery.com, will I simply put http://capecodupholstery.com in the Website URL field, leaving Directory/Path and Subdirectory blank.

You put capecodupholstery.com in the Directory/Path field because that's the root of the website with that domainname and http://www.capecodupholstery.com in the Website URL field.

Using www in the URL is what most people expect in URLs.

EW content in the root of the FTP server, where the dotCom and dotOrg folders are, is not served by the webserver. So you may want to remove these EW files and folders.

Thank you for the FTP info and also the about cleaning up the other files, which I did. Those happened with the times I published the site improperly.

Publishing in iWeb, the URL path to my Homepage is www.capecodupholstery.com/furniture_upholstery_home.html. If you're familiar with iWeb you know iWeb includes the first page name in the site, in the URL. Will EverWeb do the same or will it simply be capecodupholstery.com. I'd actually prefer if it did use the page name in the URL as it would avoid the need for setting up 301 redirects. I already have a ton of 301s in an htacces file because of the way iWeb creates the URLs.

I am very lucky with my search rankings for my site, so I want to make sure I don't loose any ranking when I start publishing with EverWeb.

Answered my own question about the URLs. Once I got my site published I could see what the URLs would look like. All the URLs are fine except for my home page because iWeb includes the name of the first page in Site Sidebar in the URL. So I should only need one 301 redirect for the whole site.

Hi.

I use Godaddy for hosting because I have 27 websites. Most are word press. You said :

The Internal Server Error depends on hosting provider, rather than software used to create it. To eliminate publishing errors you can try to publish with EverWeb. Open EverWeb application, go to File (it’s on the Mac menu bar on the top left corner of the screen) -> Edit Publishing Settings -> publish to: FTP server and fill in the necessary details. If that won’t work, you will have to contact your hosting provider

I get Error 22 Server address not correct. I am trying to verify with you that is asking for the IP. I did call my host twice and verified all the FTP details are correct.

I am confused because other FTP Clients ask for the HOST and mean IP and I am not sure what Everweb is asking for in SERVER. I cannot tell what to fix to get a result.

My support ticket was started yesterday and my package I paid for literally expires today at the end of the day.

If you could please help me resolve this issue I would be very grateful.
